How much “poorly timed” for the sake of character development is ok?

Writing a book, and I have two characters and one, let’s call her Melissa, is really into the other, deemed Gary. Gary is really ignorant of her romantic advances. I have an escape scene where the two are forced into an uncomfortable situation. Both these characters are pretty underdeveloped. During the escape scene, should I focus on the escape, or make it more comedic and focus on developing Gary and Melissa’s romance/relationship? FYI, this isn’t super far into the story, should I save it for later?

 •
How much corny romance for the sake of character development is okay?
None. Corny romance does not develop characters, or their relationship. I would choose either: Humour Romance Character But not all three.
