My Mountain Encounter

Let me first say that ever since I was young, I’ve always been fascinated by the ancient past. I was always captivated by the mythical and legendary creatures often told in stories. I traveled all over my region to experience the landmarks and key locations. It was only natural to want to visit the mountains that overlooked the city I was in at the time. At the local bar, I overheard a story from another patron about a fearsome monster at the top of the mountain. My curiosity was building. I asked the man about his story He didn’t reveal much. He just said he caught a glimpse of a monster at the top of the snow covered mountain and that I’d be better off not going up there. When I asked him why, he just said I’d be lucky to survive I was hooked. I absolutely had to go up there. A legendary creature that no one can identify? There’s no way I could resist! I decided to climb the mountain tomorrow So I set off. I drove to the base of the mountain and parked in a camping area. I grabbed all my climbing gear and headed for the trail. It was a rather challenging trek up the mountain. I made sure to stop and take a break every so often. The fresh air was amazing. The sounds of nature was beautiful. Every so often I saw large butterflies, deer with curved antlers, large spider webs and big cocoons. Nothing I couldn’t handle, I was plenty experienced with these types of creatures. I did get nervous when I saw a young bear. Beautiful brown coat with a white fur spot on its head in the shape of a crescent Hours of hiking go by and I’m near the summit. I reach what appears to be a blocked off cave entrance with a posted sign in front. The letters were heavily faded with time. There’s no way I would let this deter me. The cave was blocked off with wooden boards. I pried a few off and went inside. It was dark. The light from outside barely did anything. I had a high lumen flashlight on my utility belt. I love my belt. It carries anything I need. Flashlight, survival knife, repellent, and six red and white spherical balls that attach with a magnet. My most important equipment. I traverse the cave. It’s cold. Really cold. I set my bag down and pull out a long sleeve jacket and change into pants. I continue on and see an occasional water pit, stalactites, and huge boulders which I’m strong enough to push. Then it hits me. Silence. I just realized it had been a long time since I had seen any other sign of life. I thought for sure it see lots of bats in here. There weren’t, but I now felt like I was being watched. It was like these walls and boulders had eyes and were watching my every move. That unnerved me, but I had to push on. I soon saw the cave exit. It was lightly snowing. Little flakes were gently falling to the ground. I can barely make out a trail I follow the path and I can see something in the distance. It’s at the end of the path that opens into a small area with some trees. It’s a slightly raised mound but I see... a person?? Someone is out here at the top! As I drew closer I can make out a yellow backpack, pants, red shirt, and matching red had. I swear I’ve seen that backpack somewhere... I step on a twig and that gets his attention. He turns around and my blood turns cold. I knew I shouldn’t have come. Nothing in my years of living could’ve prepared me for this. I knew this man. He is me. Or at least, who I used to be. I never thought I’d ever face my past up here. My past was the fearsome monster at the top of this silver mountain. I came looking for a mythical creature, and I found a legendary monster. A monster that I created many years ago. A voice rang out inside my head. An unfamiliar voice, but that single sentence resounded in my mind. “Trainer Red wants to battle” He grabs the bill of his hat. My lips tighten. His gaze unwavers. My teeth grit. His silence is deafening. The music starts.
https://youtu.be/8Cw3vfuHh_A
My hand reaches my belt and grabs the first red and white ball. I know this will be a losing battle
