Who wants to get the Subclass Customization back?

For those who are new, in D1 we had the fully customizable, unlockable subclasses for your characters that you levelled up by just using them and earning XP. I'm advocating to have this brought back, as the trees have hurt the customizability of your character, and your attachment to your builds. The best feeling of Destiny 1's customization was that you were able to choose what melee ability you wanted, along with your grenades, and choose how your super worked, while still being able to choose how much mobility, toughness, and recovery you had along with subclass ability synergy perks. A lot of the later tree perks worked extremely well for chaining abilities together and working for your advantage while you needed to get your super charged, and often times helped with the process. I want the game to go back to this system, but also expand on it, making it more flushed out and just have better chaining abilities. With Bungie's addition of class abilities, they have more options for these perks that they can add to the game. Edit: Just as a clarification, I DON'T want Bungie to bring back Destiny 1's customization as it is. I want them to take the idea and expand upon it for future releases. They can still do multiple supers with the system per subclass, but they also need to do a much better job of balancing in their sandbox to avoid D1's issues of certain perks being just the only good one. One example that I'm thinking is making the perks more specific than a generic all around perk. Like Backstab from Blade Dancer being activated only if you're undetected. Edit 2: I just made another post about new exotics and how standard they've become. Here's the link if anyone would like to give their opinions. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/251015976?sort=0&page=0 Edit 3: Since people don't know what expanded upon means, I don't want everyone to run the same perks. I want the perks to be more diverse than we had in D1, and definitely than in D2. I want more perks possible to be chosen, more like an RPG instead of the poor excuse we had in D1. As always, I look forward to seeing everyone's comments and thoughts in this thread.

    • A skill tree added back into the game would be great, the problem is, Bungie lacks the talent to balance a game and that's Probably the reason they got rid of it in the first place. I say wait for borderlands 3 so you can see how a real loot shooting, rpg works. Or, go play Borderlands 2 if you didn't get a chance.

        • Yes, but I would like to see an even more evolved form of what we had. More options, more grenades etc. This is actually one of the main reasons that I think despite how much I dislike it, we need a destiny 3. The subclass problem is such a fundamental issue along with a bunch of others in D2 that fixing them would require the same amount of time as just making a whole new game. Really hope this gets addressed in D3, if it does then maybe we have a hope of that one being the final destiny that just gets continuous content drops as well as all of D1 and D2 content being ported into it.

          • Yeah i think that would be a good idea, I also think that your armor, mobility and recovery stats should have much more impact than they do currently. Its like all the rpg elements of the game are jus there for show and have no real meaning. The only thing that matters really is light level and even then activities scale to it so you never feel more powerful. This game is halo with the illusion of rpg elements

            • Don't bring back customization like D1's though, because that still wasn't that good compared to how other games handle skill trees. It should come back with more depth and options, more viable options. Or else, people will be running the best loadout and defeating the purpose of the subclass customization.

                  • I don’t think it will happen in D2, would require a huge overhaul to the in game system. More likely to happen in the next game though. But after two bad starts to two games, who really wants to buy the third installment in the first year.

                    • Well, if they do read this then hey, maybe. But If they know anything that it takes a few years to balance or make all those nodes. They could have a progressively good subclass system but PvP would have issues. At that point the game should just be PVE based.

                    • Not only do I want subclass customization back, but I also want new skills. I know Bungie is wedded to the grenade/melee combo, but what about double melee, double grenade, or perhaps a third or fourth option?! Let's get crazy Bungie, unleash the skillz!!

                    • I dont. I like the new cluster system within each subclass, cause each plays differently and has it's pros/cons depending on the situation. Also, for how much variety builds could have had in d1, most didnt take advantage of it and ran the same builds. Although it would be tough to code, if they were to make a change, i'd like them to add a blank cluster, that would allow us to pick/build our own cluster from the abilities we already have.

                      • No. Anyone with a brain ran the same tree. There was no variety. D2 actually has variety in trees.

                          • Commenting on this again to remind everyone D1 had some of the most pathetic "customization" to ever exist in a rpg game. And while D2 offers less choice, each choice in D2 carries more magnitude in terms of how you actually play

                                  • I strongly agree I haven't played D1 since D2 came out but i hopped on D1 the other night and completely forgot just how awesome and customizable the supers were and how they fed into pretty much everything super armor resistance mobility recovery grenades. It was all awesome I forgot how good we all used to have it back in D1 they definitely need to go back to the old D1 customizable supers that we had.

                                    • I liked the d1 system better for sub classes. They just needed to add quick buttons for those who were not sure which abilities to pick. Bungie tends to over correct and this is one of those times.

                                      • EDIT: reposting from a reply to a comment below. I missed the customization in D1, but I also mostly kept to a single build for each character. With the subclass groups in D2, I ostensibly have three different ways to play each subclass. Are some better than others? Sure. And I think this is where SupremeCommodore hit the nail on the head - Bungie absolutely struggles with balancing anythying. I think the problem is they have no idea how RPG mechanics work. Every good RPG has a set of rules for making characters, and those give a basic sense of balance to character creation. Are these rules always perfect? No, but at least they give guidelines. I feel like the subclass developers at Bungie have no guidelines. It seems they simply think "hey, I have an idea, this would be fun!" And then make up a class that does crazy #$!@ (see Sunbreakers in D1). Or that does stuff that makes no sense (why does landing headshots while crouching make you invisible for way of the wraith? Attacking in almost every RPG makes you lose invisibility, not gain it). And then they don't talk to anyone about how these things will impact the rest of the game world. So it feels like they're basically just making stuff up, and then letting it loose without testing or balancing.

                                        • The old system wasn't any better. Yes we had more choices, but were they really better choices? The majority of people only played a couple of builds. There was not a noticeable difference in builds if you looked at 10 different characters of the class. I agree more choices are better, but don't do the D1 way. Make D3 have the choices, but more choices that are worth choosing.
