Something I gave up writing in 2016. In game references to myth, legend and history.
Started writing this but realised how big the task was to get all the references in. Been sat on my tablet for three years now, thought I’d dump it. Might be some mistakes, haven’t really proof read it.
Khvostov - The first weapon you find in the game, also the name of Alexei Khvostov, a Russian minister, who concocted a plan to assassinate Grigori Rasputin.
Tlaloc - the name of an Aztec deity, a storm god, the Aztecs sacrificed humans to this god so that he would bring the rain.
No land beyond - a reference to a quote from a famous Soviet world war 2 sniper called Vasily Zaytsev, whilst talking about the defence of Stalingrad against the Germanic forces, he stated "for us there was no land beyond the Volga." The Volga being a river on the eastern edge of Stalingrad, blocking any retreat for the Russians.
Lyudmila D - this is a reference to another famous Soviet sniper, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the most successful female sniper in history, nicknamed "Lady Death." She was credited with over 300 kills, and made a hero of the Soviet Union.
Kumakatok HC4 - kumakatok, is a legend from the Philippines that speaks of three robed figures that come in the night and knock on your door, associated with bringing bad omens and signifying death for the occupants of the house they visited.
Cocytus sr4 - in Greek mythology cocytus is a river in the underworld, it flows into the river Acheron, across which is the underworld where the dead reside. In his work the divine comedy, Dante refers to cocytus as the ninth and lowest circle of the underworld where traitors reside covered up to their necks in ice.
Herja D - Herja is a river in Romania, it is also the name of a Valkyrie from Norse mythology, Valkyries chose who would die and who would live in battle and then took the chosen dead to Valhalla.
Zarinaea D - Zarinaea is the name of a Scythian queen, wife of Marmares ruler of the Parthians. It's a long story, but it boils down to this, during war with the Medians zarinaea killed her husband Marmares, married the king of the medians, in doing so gave up the Parthians to be enslaved by the medians whilst saving her own people the scythians.
Gaheris D - Gaheris is a character from Arthurian legend, a nephew of King Arthur, a knight of the round table.
Osiris - Egyptian god of the dead, son of Ra, brother and husband of Isis and posthumously father to Horus
Aaru's passage (ToO shader) - aaru is the name for ancient egypts version of heaven (the field of reeds) you would spend eternity here if you passed the final judgement in the hall of maat.
Fabian strategy - a military tactic first used by roman dictator Fabius Maximus whilst defending Rome from Hannibal's Carthaginian army. As referenced in flavour text it is a war of attrition.
Khepri's Sting - Khepri is an Egyptian god associated with the scarab beetle, the scarab beetle being an element of this armours design.
Ophidian Aspect - Ophidia is a group of reptiles, which all modern snakes belong to. The flavour text reads 'have I the aspic in my lips?' This is also a reference to snakes along with the perk name 'viper totemic' the aspic viper or the asp is a snake found in Europe, it's bite can be fatal if untreated.
Thagomizers - a Thagomizer is the club tail of a stegosaurus it was an offensive armament, much as the gauntlets are as they give you an extra melee. The flavour text also references the dino tail and extra melee with 'don't get too close'
Achlyophage Symbiote - achlyophage may be a reference to a particular insect species, although the connection is not a strong one, however Symbiote refers to mutual interaction between two different species, as in a parasite, when looking at the helm you can see a parasitic growth from it.
Apotheosis veil - in theology apotheosis refers to the idea that an individual has been raised to godlike status or 'deified'
Astrocyte verse - an Astrocyte is a cell in your brain and spinal chord, if you read the flavour text it refers to the helm changing the wearers exoneurons into the stuff of pure thought.
Empyrean Bellicose - empyrean is an Ancient Greek concept of the highest heaven, considering this helm allows you to kill ones enemies from above I can see how it fits.
Bellicose means eager to fight
Telesto - Telesto is a moon of Saturn. It was discovered by Smith, Reitsema, Larson and Fountain in 1980 from ground-based observations.
