Why Sacrilege Is My Favorite Mission in Vanilla D2 (my opinion.)

A lot of people like missions like Homecoming or Chosen because of the action, the cutscenes, the linear focus of it. I tend to look at the background and not the foreground. I like looking at the bigger picture so I can see the small, unseen details. When Destiny 1 was being marketed, Bungie said the purpose of Destiny is to have a very open area to explore. To allow the player to discover things but have an engaging story. To me, Sacrilege does the best of this. To begin, let’s start with the story of Sacrilege. You have been sent to IO to find Ikora Rey, the warlock Vanguard. Upon arriving, you find her scared, confused, angry. Gina Torres does an incredible job with her voice acting in this. Skip to 2:10. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DwHigowfDVk Listen to her voice. You can hear the distress that she is feeling. The music reflects this. It gives you a feeling of wonder and sadness. Ikora has lost everything. YOU have lost everything but your light and will, and Humanity is on the brink of extinction. And so...as you walk across the volcanic landscape of IO, you can feel this loss. The golden age, our planets, our moons, even most of our own damn cradle world has been taken. Now, we’ve lost our home, Our city, our friends, our family, our light. Sure we, the players, regained ours but Ikora, lost hers. Could you imagine that feeling of POWERLESSNESS? Knowing you once could raze entire armies with the flick of your wrist, now barely being able to fall down without breaking something. Knowing that even your best AND MORE WAS NOT ENOUGH. All of this is what Ikora felt, and I can relate to this feeling of powerlessness... Optional, this one is a life story so...+plus. MAJOR trigger warning. There are talks of death and animal death in it.
When I was in the eighth grade, I helped run a small farm of animals. It had guinea pigs (because why not), goats, chickens..basically what you’d expect to be on the farm. Over time, the animals would grow sick and die. I tried to the best of my ability to keep them alive but I always had to bury them. A lot of people don’t realize what comforting a living creature in its dying moments before having to bury it hours later is like. It’s horrible. And it hurts. It takes its toll on you. Eventually you get numb to the pain of grief and it’s..disturbing. Chilling. It brings you a new pain of not doing more. Being helpless. Being useless and being unable to feel anymore grief. You feel powerless. Sometimes suicide becomes a thought. I’m better now but I look back on that year and it still sends shivers up my spine. This is why I can’t bear to think about what it’s like to live as a soldier. To watch the people you fight beside..DIE in front of you is just an awful thing. Ikora saw this and you can feel pain too. She feels the numbness, and the pain of helplessness too..
The gameplay: The Gameplay really shows the CORE of what Destiny is about. There is a story that has INCREDIBLE visuals and you can watch as Cabal ships fly overhead, with the energy from the Traveler following suit. Yes there is a directive to go to the base but it’s not restricting you to that area. You can explore, you don’t have to follow a linear path. You CHOOSE when you wish to progress. That freedom is something that needs to be captured more. And Bungie can do it. Take Halo CE for example. That game was all about having it open. In fact, some of the levels didn’t even have any form of out of bounds barrier. There needs to be more of that. Thank you for reading. And if you read my personal story, you’re a trooper. Most people take off when they here it.

  • Wow dude, sorry you went through that. Its not my favorite mission but yeah there is a TON of emotion in Ikora during those moments, her actress is fantastic.

  • My favourite mission is Utopia. The one where you go into the Titan arcology to recover the cpu. The entire mission plays like a descent into hopelessness and madness. I want to say depression, but maybe not that far. When you break into the arcology, the PA is just filling you with a massive dose of optimism - anything is possible - even the Traveler coming to Titan and terraforming it. You are doing a great job, and everyone on Earth is proud of us. You run past a cleaner-bot doing it's thing. That is the only bit of hallway that isn't overgrown with plants, but the plants are "happy-looking." A simple coat of paint and a little gardening, this place will be even better than in the Golden Age. Then, you open the first door. You realise you aren't in Kansas anymore. The rot from the hive starts to encompass your every sense. Wide open spaces are replaced with cramped and claustrophobic alleys, where you have to duck down to pass. You have a very Aliens in the ventilation shaft feel to it as the last hope of reprieve is shattered. You drop down a shaft, straight into several human skeletons. This is your fate, if you slip bit one tiny fracrion in the wrong direction. When you finally reach the cpu, you are rewarded by another massive open room. A reminder of what we had, and lost. Don't stay there too long, or you see the mama of all "abandon all hopes." The big, big, worm thing swimming right next door. You realise there is no chance of salvaging this place. Take the cpu and run! You have to traverse the heart of the hive, endless hordes of enemies in a vehicle that can't shoot back. The intention is "you have no chance of fighting, or even trying to fight back. Run your hiney out of there as fast as you can." When you make it to the center, you are treated with one final look at the Golden Age - the forests in the arcology. We used to have such wonderful dreams... look back and see what our nightmares look like now. You get yanked out of there in a classic "it was just a dream" type of finish, and you are thankful for that.

    • Mine is Chosen only for the whole City section (I love fighting in Cities, partly why ODST is my favorite Halo game)

      • The original storyline altogether was quite good. But yes I agree this mission in particular was very good.

          • I like the mission Utopia. You get a sense for the scale of what was lost during the Golden Age and even some history if you stand around and listen to the PA. Also you get to run over Hive in a tank and I saw the leviathan on my first playthrough.

          • What's interesting to me is that Ikora says Zavala has forgotten he'll die his final death. but Zavala hasn't forgotten, he'd sooner sacrifice himself to protect humanity than think about his own mortality. This is where Ikora being scared of dying comes in, she tries to rationalize and explain things from her perspective even though she isn't entirely accurate with her portrayals.

                  •
After you've held a sibling or parent (or both) in your arms as they die you realize that even your closest pet is still nothing more than an animal. Still hurts, but more like a bee sting in your chest instead of feeling like a building is sitting on your chest.
Other than that... Yeah, Sacrilege has some impact on me every time I play it. Damn good part of Destiny.

                      • I had a similar feeling when I was younger, my family had a lot of pets. Dogs mostly and before I had moved out I had seen my share of death. From family, friends to the animals I shared my younger years with. Comforting that animal in its final moments really gives you a different perspective on things. It is depressing and numbing, but if you can take an appreciation for the time you have during life it can shape you into an amazing person.
