D&D Diary Entry 6

Day 21 It took us longer to get back without our Halfling guide, the Wisps were starting to appear as we broke the tree line and emerged, exhausted, on the old Elven bricks of the Travelers Road. Timmy says they’re enchanted with wards to keep the worst of the things in the swamps away. Even the ancient elves feared those Nightmares… I think that’s what the locals call them. One of the wall guards greeted us and said the Queen would be expecting us immediately. That was our plan, so we obliged. She did not look happy… I mean, she rarely looks happy in my brief experience with her, but tonight she looked particularly grumpy. She sat on her desk, arms crossed, and I didn’t get a good look at her last time, but she’s impressive. Most High-Elves I’ve stolen from are tall and thin. Not Emaree. Tall, yeah, but she’s almost as built as Drahg! She spoke one word, “Well?” so Stubbles and Clement reported what we encountered. Neither of them mentioned the stuff with Timmy. Emaree, still glaring, blinked for the first time since we entered and said, “So you didn’t finish the job.” Not a question, but Clement answered anyway, “With all due respect, we were prepared for bandits, not a cult full of former Imperial soldiers.” “Speaking of Imperials… the body of a well-known Imperial merchant was found in the swamp outside of town. His neck was snapped-” as she spoke, two guards brought the stinking corpse in “- by a single, large hand judging by that mark.” Her glare shifted to Drahg. “Got anything to say for yourself?” Drahg returned her glare, “That man was with the Cult. I didn’t know about them in the ruins. I only knew him because he, and the others I’ve killed, did to my friends and family what they did to the bodies in those ruins.” Then Drahg reached for his great sword and the guards raised their weapons while he finished, “And I have more people to kill before they, or I, can finally rest. Don’t try to stop me.” Emaree rolled her eyes, “So very dramatic. Put your toys away, children. My curiosity is sated. Now, you did half the job so you’ll get half the pay. Except you,” referring to Drahg, “Next time, ask first. Dirty jobs leave stains if they’re not done properly.” I liked that line a lot. We were negotiating a new contract to finish the job with the assistance of her best men, led by Emaree herself, when one of her men burst in, “We’re under attack!” it was at this point we noticed the noises of the constant festivities had died down and been replaced by chanting… We followed Emaree and her guard along the wooden ramparts that had been built over the crumbling stone walls along the edges of the city. All along the outside were rows of chanting Black-Eyed Zombies, some held torches lit by magical green flame while others held weapons and shields. They stood perfectly still, save for their heads that followed us as we walked. When we reached the east entrance, the Sorceress stood in the middle of the road with her Imperial guards. “We have come for the crystal.” She shouted. Emaree glared at us and Timmy explained to her how dangerous it is. He convinced her that we can’t let them have it, that they won’t spare the Crossroads forever. Timmy is very persuasive… Emaree nodded and shouted down, “I am the Queen of the Crossroads! My family has held this city for centuries longer than the existence of your Empire! I will never submit to anyone!” Then she added some colorful words and insults that got cheers of approval from the gathered crowd. The Sorceress responded, her voice magically enhanced, “Very well, I’ve waited this long for it, what’s a few more weeks? We have your city surrounded. I’ve sent soldiers up the roads to warn travelers the plague from Atamar has spread to the Crossroads. No one will come for you. You will die cowering behind your walls and then we will collect what we came for and add your bodies to our ranks. And before I depart, I’ll leave you with something to ponder.” She then rose her hand, a flash of green magic shot into the sky and created an illusory symbol of some kind depicting an eye surrounded by a swirling vortex. Then Clement stabbed Emaree in the back with a dagger… as he rose his shield and mace, we heard cries below. I saw more apparent cultists had drawn daggers and began attacking people in the crowd. They’d planned for something like this for a while… I wonder how far their reach extends if both Drahg and Timmy have dealt with them in the past? Emaree pulled the dagger out and stabbed Clement in the throat, then allowed Stubbles to heal her while her men dealt with the Cultists below. When we turned back to the road, the Sorceress and her soldiers were gone, but the chanting Undead remained. Far too many to fight through…though I could probably slip past them pretty easily. I’ll sleep on it. Emaree turned to one of her men, a wizard by the looks of him, and told him to “send a messege to the King…” Then we returned to the Palace to rest for the night…not easy to do with the constant chanting. Timmy says he can’t translate it properly, but it’s a prayer to the Dead Gods. Also known as the Lords and Ladies of Deaths Court. The Court are Deaths (One of the six Elder Gods that created the universe, supposedly) children. She grew jealous of the other Elders creating new Gods to serve under them and basically stormed their realms, beat them up, and ripped off some of their essence to create her own children… There are five of them:
- Eurbelis, Goddess of Pestilence. She’s also a Goddess of medicine and alchemy, but most people only associate her with the bad stuff. - Alameneht, God of Decay and Burial Rites. When he’s not cursing lands with famine, he’s escorting souls to their proper place in the Court. He’s also one of the few Gods outside of the Ferneli Pantheon whose worshippers are allowed to operate. Nobody likes restless spirits! - Balok, God of Wrath and Slaughter…and Torture. Some other nasty stuff…if any one God was truly evil, it’d be Balok. The only good thing he does is punish the souls of the wicked. Then there’s the Twins, Nera and Nero. - Nera is the Goddess of the Deep and the Drowned. The monsters of the deepest seas are her children. Sailors usually sing songs for her and some offer her sacrifices to ensure safe travels. - Her brother, Nero, was once considered the weakest of them. God of Deception and Deals. Along with sneaking souls out of the Court, he’s also known as a trickster. Making deals that usually end badly. He also created vampirism. Oh, also, he betrayed the other members of the Court and helped the Ferneli Pantheon seal them away in exchange for his own freedom.
Timmy thinks the Cult means to free them somehow… lovely. All right, time to try to get some rest. Tomorrow should be eventful… Day 22 We set to work today. Stubbles and Gabby offered healing, Maria and Drahg helped the guard build some fortifications around town, Timmy and Kenjin tried boosting moral and recruiting anyone that could fight to the guard…and I flew around the perimeter looking for any place to slip out of town. This is Timmy and Drahgs fight, not mine! I think I found a way out, too. The river is too wide and deep for the Undead to stand in. They have a few down the edges of it, but I can definitely ride a piece of wood or something past them! Not in the middle of the day, obviously… also, I’m a bit hesitant to abandon my new friends. I think I’ll tell them tonight and try to get them to come with me. … We’re doing this. It took some convincing, just not from me. Timmy, Kenjin, and Gabby were immediately onboard. Drahg wanted to stay and kill them all while Maria and Stubbles didn’t feel comfortable leaving all these people in need. Then Emaree entered, she’d been spying on us. She had one of her men use a Sending spell to call some of her Allies, but it would take time for them to arrive. She wants us to slip out and follow the river to Darkwater and deliver a letter to a contact. She didn’t have anyone specific, they operate via codes and dead drops. Sounds like my kinda people. “Go to the Nero’s Grin, a shipwreck turned tavern, and order the Red Rum. They’ll tell you where to go from there.” She then gave us the rest of our pay and told us to, “get the -blam!- outta my city.” We grabbed a small row boat, Stubbles cast Pass Without Trace to magically enhance our sneakiness (not that I needed it), and Gabby cast an illusion over us to make us look like simple river muck. We did it, we got out! Then we got attacked by a very large gator… it broke our boat and almost ate Maria but Drahg managed to save her. Now we’re on land following the muddy road to Darkwater. At least were out of the more forested area of the Marshes… Wetlands? Ugh. I really hate this place. - BeeBee
