A Casual Players concerns

Well, I really feel its time to write this stuff down. Reason is, a lot of people I play with, clanmates etc. who really hoped I would pick up Destiny for real again with the new content, are disappointed. But no one dares to say: Hey, its all good and fun, come back! But right now, I hate every moment I spent in destiny. No fun at all. But first things first. In Destiny, I am a casual player. In RL, I am a busy person. I do have more hobbies then gaming. I love sports. I love reading. And I love variety. Here is one big problem. Destiny 2 delivered a nice story to me. Some new nice content. But I still fight the same enemies I knew from the first game. Some variations, ok. But those do not feel too special actually. Then I did never reach 600 light before the newest exp. Now I am sitting at 580'ish and the new content is just "gated". Gated beyond stupid farming quests that just reuse old stuff. Gated behind activities that just repeat itsself over and over again. And its not that this game really is bad. Gameplay is good. But if I only do repeat stuff and do not feel I do advance, it just plain and simple sucks. Then I come to another point of motivation. I played 2 characters. One is 580, the other 560'ish. Guess how many Forsaken Exotics I found? Ah yeah right. None. How many useful? Ah right, I got meself the quest bow. That thing I indeed do use. But aside? Nothing. Like really? How many hours do you expect me to put in this game before I get something I can use and enjoy? So, right now I should do dailys, weeklys, grind up to do another mode of repeatable stuff to maybe get new gear. But .. oh this gatet bs. How many hours would this "simple level up process" take me? Guess a great lot. And how many am I going to spend with my rather negative expectations? Guess none. So, the next addon will mean we go to 700 light, the final one 800. Oh yeah. That means I will be absolutely unable to play with my friends! I repeat. I will be absolutely unable to play with my friends, my clan etc. HELL WHY!? Is it that geniuses at Bungie that can't think of a better progression system that does not lock out players? I mean would it be soo hard to just make this stupid light level shit cap at a bonus of 25% stronger (means people are as strong as with may light level in standart sandbox scenario) and -25% (means people actualy deal half damage / take double damage when they are like .. 200 light levels below something? This would be one way to still make gaining light levels important but you would no longer hinder friends and communities to play with one another without every individual needing be a power player. I guess I needn't talk about loot. You could read already what I think about the droprates. They suck. So there is a lot of room for improvements as well. Then your activities. PvE can be fun, but is only with a party of friends. Ah darn see where it goes? Ok, PvP. Oh darn, Ironbanner is gear stats enabled. Ok problem here. Normal PvE is better. Ah damn it Destiny PvP overall is just a neat little addition that pales when compared to the real PvP games. Those have 60 fps (even on console), a bigger active community and thus fairer and very well balanced matches. Better modes, bigger matches. So where does it leave us? PvPvE? Not really, gear stats are in effect, it has the not so nicely balanced PvP aspect and is grindy as hell. So while it could be fun with friends, I never ever considered grinding sleeper - because time is precious to me. So I always was a hindrance to my team. I know, its fixed now. But with me being rather low level and the game seemingly only populated by higher level players those days .. yeah, gambit really makes me feel I do not belong there too. Finally, I just want to say that I, as a casual player, would love to love Destiny. But that's hard when I constantly get this feeling the game hates me. And its not just a nabbing one. It's constant. From logging in and experiencing what feels like 5 minutes until I first land somewhere to the same activities over and over again and the same useless loot without there dropping anything that I would wish for. Oh, and I created a new character from scratch for Forsaken. So in 580 light levels: Nothing besides quest stuff. But what to do? Where is the fun? Where is the progress? And I mean the "hey, just play some hours and your can jump back in with your friends". Not the "just play a few hours daily" .. because I aint gonna do that. Time is a very precious thing to me. Gaming takes a lot of time, but actually, like other activities, it gave me back a lot of fun memories. Destiny 2 was very weak until now. I really enjoyed the bow gameplay with Forsaken. Was astounded by some lovely views and visuals. So I had a few hours I did really enjoy. But in the end, its a very few out of very many. This relation is hardly to my liking. But it is up to the developers to cater the kind of player I am - if they wan't me to play this and maybe their next game. Otherwise, I guess, I needa stick to something else. And there is some choice, soon to be even more.

  • They just need to find a middle ground. The super casual bullshit at D2 launch was terrible and created a shallow game with no playerbase. The parity introduced in Warmind created a shallow game with no playerbase and no rewards. I think most people liked Y3 of D1, and I enjoyed Y2 of D1 as well.

You can thank the YouTubers and elitist neckbeards for the ridiculous, boring, endless grind. Now we have another grind to do with the Dawning. Yay. I just came back from Red Dead 2 and I'm already tired of it lol. Bungie doesn't give a -blam!- about the vast majority of the player base. Normal players. They even have specific triumphs for the neckbeards that play this shit 24/7.

  • I'm sorry that your time is limited. I had the same issue in D1. I'm gonna have to hit you with the reality hammer now. Sorry. Destiny has always been a franchise that required time and patience to get the most out of. There's a reason Bungie calls it the "Destiny Hobby." You have to play the game a considerable amount to get the most out of it. I also have a lot going on - highschool, sports, hobbies - but the weekends are Destiny time for me. That's the way things are and that's the way they're going to be. If you struggle that much to gain levels and complete content, then my best advice would be quitting. I'm sorry.

    • I really think it’s time to consider removing the character levels and power levels in the game. No one gets excited for a power increase, but getting a god roll shotty, sniper, or Luna’s Howl is amazing! The power level keeps away potential new players and returning players. It also greatly reduces the pool of players to team up with for end game activities. Character levels force new players to experience much of the campaign with no melee, no grenades, and without getting to experience each subclass; all of these being some of the coolest “hooks” of the game. The purpose of leveling up in other progression systems is meant to serve as a training period necessary to prepare the player for end game challenges. WoW dungeons introduce mechanics that will be seen in greater frequency and difficulty in the raids. None of the milestones in Destiny 2 really prepare you for anything but the same. I would love for this new DLC to not raise anyone’s power level, create more ways for casual players to finally reach 600, and just give us new challenges and gear/weapons/mods to chase. I always have more fun when I’m max level, not forced to do any activities I don’t want to just for a power increase, and can spend my time pursuing my own goals in the game. For example, the last month of Forsaken I chased Luna’s Howl, NF exclusives, Meatball, and a god roll shotty and sniper. These are things I don’t have time to do when I have to prioritize activities that reward power increases. Just ask yourself how on earth could I ever get my friends to return to the next DLC in three months when they’re still only 550 and would need to climb some 150 levels with milestones that reward such minor increases at a time. Even WoW has catch up mechanics that allow returning players ways to join the rest of the community in relatively short time.

      • The new content is stuff to do after 600 light. It is not an expansion per say. It is an add on for stuff to do after you get to endgame forsaken. And the same will happen with the other 2 add on's.

        • I have about 2 days a week to try and play Destiny. It’s just really hard to enjoy this game being a solo player. Crucible is the same shit every game, Gambit is pretty fun, strikes are alright, but have become stale. Public events can be fun if there are enough people. Destiny 1 was good because I had plenty of time to raid and help carry. Now among family, working 50+ hours a week, and sleep, my time with Destiny is over. It was fun while it lasted. Hopefully Bungie can help improve a solo players experience. I know that’s not what all you hardcore players want to happen, but this is coming from someone that used to be a hardcore completionists when it comes to Destiny. I still want to enjoy the game, but I just never have hours of free time to complete a raid or anything now. Thank you to Bungie for countless hours of fun.

        • Agreed. I had a large clan of friends and all have addressed the same issues. I actually enjoyed Vanilla Destiny 2, it felt like a fun relaxing game. Now it’s too much of a grind and struggle, the hardcore still blast through content and hit the level cap in days while myself and casual friends feel left behind, excluded and can’t keep up. So they all quit. I’ve not seen any Exotics and I understand WHY they chose to make them so rare but having no access to any of them (like from Xur) just makes it disheartening. So I’ve moved on. Friends moved on to other things too. I feel like this game isn’t for Casuals and maybe not even Hobbyists it’s hardcore grinders only now.
