“We only have two disguised ships, so it’d be a really tight fit to get all of us in,” Omar explained. “Not all of us,” Toland resolved. He jerked his head back toward the Psions. “They’re not coming with us.” The other Risen paused in their evacuation as Eriana said, “That’s…a dangerous move, Toland.” He shrugged. “They’ll buy us time. Let them out of their cages to do what they do best.” Eriana hesitated a moment longer before crossing the room to the energy cages. The Psions remained still as she activated a panel on the wall, pressing some buttons and watching the Flayers with concern. Moments later, Kolar, Vatch, and Numoc shimmered out of existence as they were transmatted to the surface. A brief but powerful feeling of elated shock buzzed D’Ssoad’s mind. Meanwhile, the Risen had finished collecting the books and samples and rushed back through the doorway they had come from. Eriana signaled D’Ssoad and Riksis to follow her back. They crossed through into a small hangar dominated by two large jumpships with large Thresher boosters and coated in what looked like giant plates of bone. “I thought we were going to fly away, not pretend to be Ogres,” Riksis growled in disdain at the vessels. Toland stepped out from behind one of the engines. “The plating makes us appear like one of the Hive’s ships on their scanners. You’ll be joining Eriana, Eris, and I on Light in the Abyss while Vell, Wei, Sai, and Omar follow on Bane of Dark Gods.” D’Ssoad followed the Light Master into one of the ships, putting his helmet on as he caught the reek of Hive wafting out. Eriana made her way to the cockpit while the rest of them strapped in. After signaling the other jumpship, they steadily lifted off and “through” the holographic roof of the hangar. As they flew away from the Hellmouth, D’Ssoad could see the massive Hive army marching out of it and across the lunar landscape. It made him think of a wound in dead flesh oozing pus. Riksis snorted beside him, also looking at the forces below. “What a waste of time. We come for information only to be on the eve of annihilation. This pathetic moon was never worth the effort or blood we put in it.” “If it’s any consolation,” Toland spoke up, “your armies’ sacrifices were not in vain. You’d hate to know what Hive regularly do to moons.” D’Ssoad spotted a flash of green on the edge of the yellow army. Even as they flew further and further away, he could vividly imagine the skeletal, emerald monster they called Crota. “He leads all this,” he muttered as the horde expanded below. “There has to be a way to beat him.” Toland barked a harsh laugh. “If all this time researching our enemies has taught me anything, it’s that Crota’s demise is a fantasy…almost literally. Since we have time to spare, let me tell you why we don’t know how to kill him, why it’s impossible to do so, and why we wouldn’t want to even if we could.”
