Xur as he has always existed needs to end. He needs to be changed. The way I see it buying an exotic from Xur is just about the least interesting way to acquire them. I personally have never felt any exotic I just "bought from Xur to be a very memorable acquisition. Xur should instead be used for alternate ways to acquire exotics.
Xur should instead become a bounty vendor. In exchange for resources you gain for playing like legendary shards you can accept bounties. Except the bounties are different. These bounties are similar to Spider's except instead of hunting down a single target you could be tasked with just about anything. Tasks as mysterious as Xur himself. Perhaps finding some out of the way area of a map "over looking a sea of tears" or dancing on the grave of "a big guy" or sending an enemy to his doom while "punching mad". What do these things mean? It would be up to the community to decipher the message of each of the 10 bounties each week. Each week offers 10 completely new tasks for the community to ferret out the secrets of using hints from the lore and experimentation. Some will be relatively easy to figure out. Some will be relatively difficult, nothing that can't be completed with a team of 3 from LFG and Mics, not raid hard. The hard part would be figuring out what Xur wants. That would be up to the community to figure it out. This accomplishes two things. It adds a veil of mystery to the old areas of the game no one might necessarily want to visit, keeping the content relevant as the game goes on and keeps getting updated and it allows you to gain exotics through its reward system.
Completing the bounties will reward you with 1-3 Three of Coins. These will be used exactly as they have always been used. But completing the hardest bounty will reward you with a "Tincture of the Nine" drinking it will work similar to Queens Foil. But will allow you to visit the Nine's shadowy realm if you can find a portal on any of the maps that exist beyond the reef, like the moons of Saturn or Nessus, or even the reef itself. Crossing into this mysterious portal will allow you to meet with one of the 9 after finishing a little puzzle, a different one for each member. Talking to the Nine member will give you a lore triumph about said character and an exotic item you do not currently own.
This I feel would be much much more satisfying than simply buying them from Xur, get the community working together to solve each riddle, hunting down Tincture Portals, exploring older planets and activities with more depth and actually having a roadmap to the exotic items they want.
Exotics can also drop like normal as well. But this system will give players a way to EARN them and learn more about the Destiny Universe.

No thanks I'd rather just buy exotics instead of pre grinding to bring
-
Make him sell bounties and when you complete it, you get a chance of for an exotic
-
He has a use of selling exotics right now :)
-
He should sell cheap cores.
-
As cool of as an idea this is, I enjoy buying exotics from xur. I play as much as I can with being a full time student, so roughly 3 days a week, and I've gotten dicked on loot. Not so much as anything remotely usable in the exotic department and being able to see something new without rng every Friday is good to have in such a grind based game. This should either be added in addition but leave his exotics as is to get away from rng

Edited by sXeth: 9/26/2018 8:08:30 PMXur's problem is he's always felt like he's in there as a bandaid fix on problems, rather then his own distinct purpose. He's a fix to bad Exotic RNG, or to heavy ammo economy, or to questionable progression mechanics (three of coins essentially, when exotics were use as prime engrams are now). All things that should be fixed at the source, not taped over with a vendor that subverts them. About his only unique contribution for existing was back when he was selling sparrow trails. There's plenty of ideas on how to give him purpose. But he needs his own content really. Guns, cosmetics, quests, bounties, whatever.

Sounds cool, but sounds like a looooot of work. If they could do it though, awesome
-
If it wasn't for xur I wouldn't have half of the exotics I own. Not a bad idea, but for the people like me who never get exotic drops, nah.
-
That’s awesome! The hunt for the bounties sounds like deciphering hidden clues in fortnite or something -“search between...” good idea! Limiting the time to do the bounties makes it a fun weekend activity.
-
Hey that tentacle faced bastard sold me 3 of coins that he knew with his while heart were close to their expiration date. Not cool man... not cool
-
TLDR; He needs to sell edge transit
-
Did you know game informer said Xur was going to have missions before The Taken King released? That never happened.
-
I actually like that idea.
im an idiot
-
Plenty of ways to go with Xur - missions, bounties, material exchanges, unique legendary items.
-
Very intriguing ideas.
-
This would be cool, but youre assuming bungie doesnt already have plans for The Nine as characters.
-
Bring strange coin back
-
Oh god yes great idea
-
His face makes a good sex toy.
-
Yeah no just get rid of him stop buying exotics of him and earn them you scrubs git gud But seriously I agree with op
-
Am happy with the idea of getting ORIGINAL EXOTICS something like a [fish tentacle ] a shadow elemental weapon that uses mathematic arithmetic orbs and obviously slime and other things that fusion riffles play out, but honeslty something more unfamiliar, boomerangs, spears, and other unpractical weaponry or armor from the traveler and xur.

Xur has existed as an alternate avenue for players to more reliably acquire exotic items without going through even more hoops to acquire them. He is there for the player who doesn't have as much free time to invest in long game sessions. He is there for the player who just doesn't get the good drops compared to the rest of their clan-mates. He works fine as it is.
Also can we just stop with this 'earn' crap about exotics? They're random. Only quest exotics can be "earned", and Xur never sells those.
What happened to strange coins? I remember back in D1, having to grind a few hours for one coin so I could buy the "Patience and Time" sniper from Xur. I had done all heroics and nightfalls, but didn't have enough coins at the time. I think we eventually went to a gold chest that had a guaranteed drop for one coin. Lol

Edited by VIPER__g: 9/25/2018 10:11:56 PMUm just no.... he is there for those unlucky with Rng And screw that EARN crap
-
Just give him a broom. At least he could sweep something while waiting for those 50 players that actually needed something of his.
-
this literally happens too damn often: Xur does not exist EXCLUSIVELY for YOU! he provides nice shit for everybody, and if you find his inventory lacking; congratulations, you've hit end-game, thats usually where he becomes irrelevant, like many vendors.
