Gating progression is sometimes a great way of making the progression meaningful. If the Spider sold a core for 50 legendary shards no matter how many you bought, masterwork cores would instantly lose value for people who had thousands. Meanwhile people with only about a hundred shards would be starved of them. Making the price double after every purchase is a nice way of evening out that difference that's caused by the high differential of players' currency.
Plus, it makes much more sense from a realistic perspective. If the Spider has 100 masterwork cores, he's likely to raise the price once his load gets lower. Realism doesn't count for much of course, but it's still a small factor to account for.
