I started about a month before Taken King. I was hooked immediately by the responsiveness of the controls and effectiveness of the melees. In most games melee is a last resort and totally ineffective, but in Destiny it's part of your gameplay. I was completely amazed by the Taken King storyline and the worlds Bungie created(especially the moon and the dreadnaught). Later I had to go into pvp for the swords(my first ever pvp experience) and even though I hated it at first I started to really enjoy it.
D2 has been a series of letdowns in comparison. It's getting better, but they still make these baffling decisions( like Control every Iron Banner no matter how stale it gets) that rather than creating variety ACTUALLY create a monotonous sameness to everything.
I'm still playing. It's still my favorite game. I just wish that upon pushing forward an idea they would ask themselves one question: Does this help create longevity and incentivize play or not?
The Solstice armor was a great idea that I didn't see the merit of at first. Lowering ttk and creating more powerful gear and abilities is good. Taking IB back to LL enabled is great.
IMO, IB being Control every single time as well as insisting on pvp quickplay/competitive playlists isn't great.
I also read that future DLC wouldn't include missions. This could go either way. If they use that time to create a better common area full of hidden surprises it could be awesome. If they just do it to be lazy, it's terrible.
But I'm here to the end, for good or bad. I think eventually another Studio will take the next step and do a better job at what Bungie is trying to do(Warframe is REALLY close, if only it were first person.) but what I've seen of what's on the horizon of gaming it all looks like a bunch of Fallout clones. Maybe Rage 2 will be good.
