Invicta Legio: Part 1

Several years had passed since Hannibal met with the 3. The Consul stood on the balcony of the Executive palace in the capital city named Vitas. The sun slowly crept over the surrounding mountains in the distance. Merchants, the wealthiest in all the world, inspected their shops as workers gathered goods to sell. A group of children hurried to school past of a group of soldiers, who greeted them with much kindness. Miles away one could barely see the gate of the sprawling city from the palace. Diplomats and traders came in and out of the capital. This was peace, a beautiful one at that. He took in a breath of the fresh air and stepped back inside to prepare for his work ahead. On the western coast of the Eastern hemisphere, Bellator naval vessels docked at the port of Mare. They were here to escort an ambassador back home from the foreign land. They had just signed an alliance with the King, Remus, of the coastal metropolis. Artemis, a trained assassin for the Bellator army, was part of this escort due to her adaptability in combat. She led the guard through the white streets to the embassy. Clouds hung overhead as it rained on their way. They reached the embassy, Artemis ordered all except 2 guards to stay outside. She showed the Mare guards her documents and they let her inside. She was escorted to the ambassador’s quarters and found the King himself was talking with him. “Ambassador Cornelius, the Consul is eager for your return.” Artemis said. “Ah yes, the Consul.” Cornelius said wearily. “As am I, though not for the journey.” He stood with the King. “I am glad for our agreement, our nations shall stand strong through the years.” The King said. “Tell your Consul that I look forward to meeting him.” “I shall indeed, he will be pleased of my news.” Cornelius replied. The two shook hands and the King, with the guards from Bellator, walked with Cornelius. As they reached the entrance where the Guard stood, a messenger could be heard saying, ”MAKE WAY! NEWS FOR THE KING!” The messenger, who rode on a horse, galloped in front of them and dismounted from his steed. “My Lord,” he said clearly worried. “An unknown army marches toward us from the East. We are not sure, but we believe it to be the Occisores.” “Do not be afraid, they are a weak nation, they will not be able to break our resolve.” The King said. “But my Lord, you don’t understand! They’ve already taken Ormus and Galantir. I was dispatched from there and the city was aflame! They’re only miles from our nation’s borders!” The messenger proclaimed in fear. The King was shocked, a nation once weak was now on a conquering rampage. “My Lord... what do we do?” “Lord Remus,” Artemis said, “we may have a small guard with us but we may be of help. We signed an alliance and we will not break it now!” “But what of your emissary?” The King said with concern. “What of him?” “I shall stay and fight!” “No!” Artemis replied, “We must warn Bellator, you and the ship’s crew will sail back and tell them of the coming war!” “What about pirates? With no protection we are not even sure they will make it back!” A soldier questioned. “The crew is trained for combat. We stay. The ambassador goes back. Lord Remus...” Artemis asked, “what would you have your soldiers do?” The King thanked them for their help, and bade farewell to Cornelius and ordered the city’s guard to prepare for the inevitable siege.
