I feel like this is more a problem for the type of gamer who has any of these as their top played game:
Fortnite
PUBG
CoD
CSGO
LoL
Halo
Those of us to play primarily SP games have always been pretty friendly...well except the Soulsborne crowd, but they die every few seconds so I'll give them a pass.

The days of the first Dark Souls were the angriest times I’ve ever taken part in online gaming. You so much as swing your sword at a tree and you’d get 100 messages of pure, frothing hatred.
-
Lol the Soulsborne comment had me cracking up.
-
The Soulsborne community can be super awesome and super salty, just like the majority of communities.
-
Don’t forget the Overwatch and Destiny communities as well. All of those are easily the most toxic and negative crowds I’ve ever seen.
-
Destiny community isn't that bad
-
Umm...yeah it is. A few months ago, when Deej was describing some of the fond memories of being with friends almost everyone in #Destiny thought Bungie was basically saying “Friendship is the true endgame, quit your bitching.” This in turn, created even more tirades of negativity. Believe me, I was there to see it :/
-
Not everyone thought that
-
I know, but it just proves that every community just seems awful. Only community I’ve seen that has been positive was the Warframe community, but that was after like 5 or 6 years of development
-
The people over at gearbox forum are real cool too.
-
Shit, I thought I'd put Overwatch first. I've heard fully grown adults cuss out children over picking their main...sad.
-
-
Yeah, it’s just horrible at this point :(
-
I never go in team chat but that is sad
