Bungie has done astounding work with Forsaken and as a person who was waiting and watching Bungie through a scope hoping they would succeed, I have been thoroughly impressed and I am excited to pick up this DLC... ...Except for the small fact that people like myself who didn't get CoO and Warmind because of the sheer disappointment of D2's launch have to pay an upfront 80$ (not including the annual pass [which is stuff that was free in D1 btw]) just to play the game. While I am still going to get all of the DLC + the pass, I feel that this pricing is gonna cause a massive disappointment for some people. I myself am worried about putting 120$ into a game because of the simple fact that with this money, I am buying basically 1 year's worth of work and so I "should be entertained for a while." This is the kind of mindset that people have with big purchases. It's just human nature that more is better. People base the expectations of a thing based on the cost and for video games, paying 60$ sets the expectation that you are receiving a finished product. Paying anymore than 60$ sets the expectation that you are gonna receive more than a finished product. While I'm sure that Forsaken will be a good DLC, I just think that the 40$ price tag + the 35$ pass + the 40$ worth of DLC (if you didn't already buy it) is gonna set people's expectations much higher than the DLC's delivery. For new people, this price is probably going to put them off and make them more hesitant to pay for it. Along with this, people who do actually pay for it may leave disappointed, feeling that they payed too much for too little. I think that the annual pass should be either free like it was in D1 or just reduced in price. The whole addition of this pass is personally unneeded and seems like a blatant attempt to take more money from the playerbase. I also want to state that I do not believe that this DLC should be free. I feel that the price, while a little high, is completely fine for what it is promising. The requirement for year 1 DLC to even play Forsaken and the pass REALLY cranks up the expectations for newer/returning players. This consequently splits up the community even further, which we have seen with people who think that the DLC should be free and those who don't. The pricing also really makes it feel more like an investment instead of a upfront purchase, like you are paying them preemptively in the hopes that they won't let you down, which I think is one of the worst decisions they could have made considering how low everyone's trust for them is. By doing this D2 has set the bar higher than they may have hoped which, if Forsaken doesn't deliver to everyone, could lead to the DLC flopping. TL;DR is that Bungie keeps setting their expectations with the price of the DLC's and I personally believe that it is also a contributing factor to each DLC's complete failure.
