My Escalation Protocol Experience - Please improve this Bungie!

Hey guys! First off, thanks so much for a great expansion. I'm loving being back to Destiny and loving all secrets, weapon upgrades, etc. Everything is solid. Except. You probably guessed it already, but Escalation Protocol. I'm running into a solid brick wall of frustration. I really like the event, the open nature, etc, but trying to actually find a group and _play_ it is damn near impossible. I've attempted it -- mostly for sleeper at this point -- probably a dozen times and only gotten past the first wave once. Now granted I'm 365ish power level, but it feels absolutely unattainable and unbeatable. It's honestly maddening. Even with two other clan mates it's extremely frustrating to play. Being in an open space _hoping_ someone wants to engage in EP feels like a total crapshoot and is really not fun. I get it being difficult -- THANKS STREAMERS FOR THAT FEEDBACK -- that's fine, but I feel like to have ANY chance at all you need at least 7-9 people to attempt it. Without matchmaking or even zoning in with a larger fireteam, which is obviously not possible at the moment, I feel like even at max power I'll never complete it even once. In my opinion, without proper matchmaking or a non-hacky way to get 9 people together, this needs to be toned down. Or given a heroic modifier. Now maybe I'm way off base and by the time I eventually hit 380, it'll be scaled appropriately. If that's the case I guess I just need to wait it out and GET GOOD. But I have a hard time believing that _even_ at 370+ a regular fireteam would be able to make a dent without hoping and praying some passerby wants to invest their time into this event. I get Datto (he's the best!), Goth, broman, and those guys can finagle teams of 9 together to compete, but I don't have hours to invest in trying to convince people in the zone to invite my friends, LFG boards, etc. So i guess to sum it up, the most frustrating thing here is that I feel like beating this event -- even at endgame -- requires some level of luck just to get enough people to do it. It's like... people RNG. And maybe more like _capable_ people RNG. Let's keep the RNG for gear, please, and at least give everyone a level playing field and a fighting chance to beat this. OR, tone this thing down.

  • Right now Escalation Protocol is a joke. I cannot fathom any development team considering the creation and implementation of a large scale encounter WITHOUT matchmaking. It boggles my mind. That said, I wouldn't even have so much salt over this if Bungie didn't purposely FORCE players into Escalation Protocol to finish at least one quest line well before that player probably ever hits the baseline light level to participate. Furthermore, and this really makes me wonder; what is a player's incentive to participate in Escalation Protocol if they don't have a pre-made team ready to go? NONE. You get absolutely NOTHING for even making the effort. Not even a single faction token. I see players actively leave the map rather than waste their time giving it a shot because it is an utter waste of time.

    • Just to clarify further: my issue is with the problem just trying to attempt this creates. I don't care that it's hard. If I can't beat it because I screw up, cool. I don't want free, easy loot. I just want a fair chance to try and beat this event. Raids are an end-game six person activity. You can zone in with SIX people. Nightfall, three, zone in with THREE. Trials, etc. You get the point. There's no baseline here. No starting point and no accountability from other players.

    • EP needs a selectable game mode UI like the raid or any activity in y1 of d1. We should be able to at least assemble six people for it.

      • Reminds me a bit of doing the Warsat thing on Skywatch while the Enemies were moving against each other and a Pack of Wolves was prowling and then good ole Urzok would show up just to spice things up. I jump into an EP to help when I see one. Lights a little low but I will rampage on ads while the higher level folks go for the throat. It's a little chaotic but you don't learn to sail on calm seas.

        • We messaged blue berries and got them to invite 1 friend 5-6 competent people at 350+ light is really all you need to clear a wave 3 times.

          • I got kinda lucky. I iust got sleeper this morning. I was stuck at 2/3 rounds complete. Manage to spawn in with a group of 7 or 8 who were already engaged in EP. I'm with you, I don't mind it being "hard" but being under leveled means getting annihilated very quickly and a whole lot of frustration. Some form of match making would be nice. Hell even making changes to how gaurdians enter and instance would help. (I don't know if that's even possible.)

          • It’s just an average horde mode with a pain in the ass preparation

          • Basically its a disjointed mish mash right now. People are all over the place no one is coordinating and most of them even if you do get to spawn the first Orge its with 50 some seconds and with most everyone involved hoovering around 345-350 you can't DPS fast enough to down it. By the time everyone is at light level necessary, EP will be fairly irrelevant piece of game ala Archon's Forge and Court of Oryx.

            • Need 7-9 people to complete event? Let’s cap the instance at 3 solo players. Bungie logic.

              • It is frustrating to do, but if you can somehow get a good team together, it can be very enjoyable. I took part in a nine man run last night, and we beat the whole thing. Easily the most fun I've had playing D2. Like everything else in this game, amazing concept, poor execution.

                • Simple way around this is reward player for being in a clan have a clan rally in petrol where you can press it and it lets upto 9 people in that instance but if you have other guardians in, it won’t let you, that way clans can help other people and help themselves!

EP is a great idea with terrible execution. It needs an immediate rework. It should start with addressing the public event stalling, which is already the go to choice of trollers. Then matchmaking/its own zone on mars, with nothing else there. Followed by scaling the difficulty and (better) rewards to the average LL of the team.

                • I think escalation protocol should be kept as is, but, increase the amount of allowable guardians instanced on each p2p server and reduce the amount of available instances for mars to promote more guardians to join EP (since the likely hood of joining would be higher because of more available guardians per instance). Or, move EP to a separate destination activity location like Prison of Elders. Personally, I prefer the former of the two.

                • I had never felt more useless in my Destiny career until escalation protocol. By stage six all the enemies I shot at were immune to me because their level was 400. I once went into the crucible in d1 at about 20 light. I didn’t feel useless because I could actually get kills in it. In this I am just tethering the boss, watching as my companions constantly die

                  • The EP is called an end game for a reason. Its supposed to be hard and takes communication to find the guardians, up to 9, to do it. Yet everytime im on Mars, ONE guardian(~345), thinks its a great idea to try to solo it(usually a titan). Heads up for you guardians. Even if you solo complete the 1st wave by yourself, you get nothing for doing it and each wave gets a little harder starting from a recommended PL of 370 to 400 at wave 7.

                      • I have a feeling that Bungie play tested EP in a controlled test enviroment and not in a live simulation. Meaning, i dont think they had the issue of getting 9 people into the same spot on mars. Ive seen guides on how to get 9 people to join in and its basically a wall of text with allot of steps you have to do. Surely that could not have been the true idea Bungie had when they came up with this.

                      • I think the easiest fix is for them to fix match matching. The instances should fill with the 9 people in it before creating a new one. Many times I have logged in, and I am the only one in an area.... and not a single person spawns in

                        • You can do the 1st event fairly easy. Mainly it's nice to have a couple of hunters running tether to keep the adds under control. I've been able to get through the 1st round since my light was about 345. Mostly met up with people by luck. I wasted hours trying to match and failed. But a few times things just worked out and easily completed lv1 events.
