Destiny 1 wasn’t as good as people claim to remember. Destiny 2 isn’t as bad as people insist. The problems that plague Destiny 2 are rooted in the fundamental problems that have plagued this game since launch: too many contradictory notions of what this game should be; lack of a consistent vision on Bungie’s part; and the unified sandbox failing to meet anyone’s needs. By the end of Y3, Destiny 1 was a pretty good looter-shooter/MMO hybrid. But was a broken mess in pvp. But instead of realizing that the game’s foundation was pve and not pvp, Bungie forced changes onto the game trying to recreate Halo’s MP in the Crucible. The result was Bungie broke the pve end game. So in essence you have a looter shooter with no loot that has any impact on game play. Worse still in trying to please Competitive Halo players they broke everything that made Destiny unique in terms of game play (#power-fantasy). As one poster summed it up, “In Destiny 1 I was a Jedi. But in Destiny 2, I’m basically a stormtrooper.” That is Bungie’s screwup in a nutshell. They failed to realize that more people were enjoying being that Jedi, than were bitching about dying to space magic in pvp. And in retooling the game to appeal to a very vocal minority of former Halo player, they alienated the game’s core audience. Solution? Simply? Combine D2s everything else, with a return to D1s play mechanics and weapon systems. Then either go back to random rolls on gear or greatly expand and deepen the mods system (Warframe). Which means accepting that Destiny is a PVE franchise with pvp. Not the other way around. But they can’t go forward with the changes they made to the loot system and the game’s game play. They will lose the the D1 player base permanently, and the current casual fanbase isn’t invested enough in the game to truly replace it.

 • I personally would love them to upgrade the Mod system rather than go back to random rolls. I’d rather have the ability to customise weapons myself rather than relying on RNG. Chris Barrett said they will be reworking the mods to “focus on reducing redundant mods, more unique theming, and greatly increasing their impact on your power”. Whatever that means. I’m pretty sceptical about how far they’ll really go with the mods. It has the potential to be a game changer but I suspect it’ll be more superficial than that. Bungie just don’t seem to like relinquishing control of the game to players. Got to maintain that balance.

 • No. I don’t. Coming from someone who was a Day One D1 player to the tune of 3500 hours. Sure, if you didn’t start playing D1 until Y3 you might honestly think that. But those of us here from the beginning either know—or should know—-better. Destiny 2 now is a better game than Destiny 1 was at 6 months. The problem is people wanted Year 4 of Destiny 1, not Year 1 of Destiny 2.

 • i was there from day 1. I got upset with the insane grind at the time, but it was a new kind of game and mostly new experience to myself. i got upset at the lack of content in the Dark Below, but I enjoyed what was there and always saw possibilities in the narrative and world of destiny. I loved the feeling and movement of D1. I loved Iron Banner (my favorite activity of D1. i had top 11 percent elo during rise of iron meaning i was double platinum rank on destiny tracker) I loved the raids and running as a sherpa in the raids to help others and fill out teams. D2 had a strong campaign with areas that are extremely under used. Yeah they filled the areas and dressed them up better than D1's areas, but never allow you to revisit or use those areas for anything else. there is no progression to D2 and you are actually forced to play the campaign on each alternate character. In D1 i could start a 2nd character and grind it out in crucible. there were also weapons that i could grind for in the first 6 months of D1, in D2 i have nothing left but a prestige helmet to get and ill probably get it this week because Benedict has it, so all i have to do is complete another prestige raid and im guaranteed to get it. ive got hundreds of raid tokens with nothing to chase. D1 had FUN. Crucible was a blast besides people complaining about Vex Mythoclast and fusion rifles which got nerfed in the first 6 months. 6 v 6 crucible and movement speed that encourages you to improve individually. 4v4 just requires you to use meta weapons and stay in a pack. its not fun and the numbers show that.

 • The core gameplay loop was the only thing Bungie got right with D1. And ironically it’s what they damaged in D2 chasing after pvp balance...,
