How Do You Determine Truth?

We live in a world of different ideas, opinions and world views. I’m asking not what you believe, but the epistemology behind why you believe what you believe. We are flawed creatures, evolved to survive in hunter/gathering societies and are therefore arguably ill-equipped to think rationally about certain ideas. How do you try to overcome this? Are you aware of your own psychological deficiencies?

  • Because I didn't used to believe in most of it, didn't used to want to believe in most of it, did my damnedest to come up with reasons not to believe in it, and in doing so determined that there was reason to believe in it. The only beliefs worth holding are those that withstood your own best attempts to undermine them.

  • I try to keep my own beliefs out of judgement and try to view things as neutrally as possible. But let me tell you it isn't easy. But it's a good question, if your way isn't the right way, then what is?

    • Eye contact, direction the eyes look when breaking eye contact, body language, and the words themselves. Pretty easy to tell when someone's lying

      • Well Oprah said "What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have." So if its true to you, its the truth. So according to Krishna, the Earth is flat.

I work with what seems to be consistent, can withstand scrutiny, and is applicable to as many pieces of information as possible. I observe, understand the possible flaws of my observational abilities, and work on being as consistent an observer as possible. I make note of what motivates me and try to understand how that might change the information I'm observing. I constantly consider the contrary, even if it's painful. I listen to what people have to say, attempt to evaluate their trustworthiness, and neither discard nor accept it until I have reason to. And that's about all I can do.

        • Uh... with evidence? But sometimes there is no truth, just opinion based on our past experiences. The more experience, the more likely we are to have one opinion that the other. Different people have different experiences, and that shapes them into the people they are, giving them different views on the world. There doesn't even have to be a "truth", it wouldn't be that interesting of a world if we all agreed on everything, would it? Maybe it would be a better world, but not as interesting.

How you determine truth is based on how you view the world. So there are two schools of thought really. There is the chronological and the hierarchical. So the chronological is how it sounds. Basically i exist because my parents had kids, they exist because their parents had kids, humanity exists because we were either put here or evolved by accident, whicever you prefer, and it goes back through a sequence of events. Hierarchical is still a series, but it doesn't require time. So i am here because gravity keeps me here, gravity exists because of the earth's mass, the earth's mass exists because the universe maintains its existence and the universe existence is kept in place by either an intelligent entity or an unknown (depending on your religious philosophy) So basically, truth is understood through one or both of those lenses. We understand truth based off of the conditions that create or maintain an idea that we perceive. So to answer your question. I believe what i believe because i choose to prefer a hierarchical perspective on ideas. I think that our understanding of the past doesn't give us a full enough picture as to why i should believe some element of truth. I think rather we should look at the conditions under which something (be it an idea or a physical thing) exists and determine whether it is reasonable to conclude that our idea is truthful. Take the hierarchical argument to its logical conclusion. I think what you will find is interesting

              • This question reminds me of Indiana Jones, who said the following: "Archaeology is the search for FACT, not truth. If it's truth you're after, Dr. Tyree's Philosophy class is right down the hall."

I don’t really “believe” things. I acknowledge truths as well as logical progressions. I wouldn’t say “that is true”, but “if this is true, then that is true”. Edit: By “truth”, I mean something I can’t deny is true. Like that things fall when I let go of them.

                • That's a difficult question that I don't know how to answer. It depends on the specific truth, I guess. Like, I know the steam coming out of a kettle is hot because once I burnt my hand on it. I know it's true because of past experience. In other cases, I 'know' something is true because I read it or was told it, which obviously sounds like assuming but let's face it, this is how we all function. Mostly, I know something is true if my brain or my soul tells me it is true.

                  • Truth is something based on more that a personal belief or some third party unverified source. To me truth is something that can be substantiated by evidence. Most importantly, the truth doesn't change just because it doesn't fit a person's desired beliefs or ideas about how things should be. Winston Churchill said "the truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it but in the end there it is."
