Do you donate your time and energy free of charge to help others? If so, what do you do? If not, why not?

2 RepliesCouple times. Mostly because I had nothing better to do. I do love the moral grandstanders though. Gotta wonder if they help out because it's the right thing to do, or because they can feel good about themselves.

No. I don't feel there is a need to volunteer where I live currently.

Edited by Tlaloc___: 2/9/2018 9:59:13 PMI've probably volunteered with a dozen organizations in my life, but not all of them received the same amount of attention. For me, it's always the other people there that gets me to come back-- volunteering is a good way to meet a variety of interesting folks, with most of the assholes of the world filtered out.

I’m a selfish -blam!- but I’ve volunteered
My fiancé made me
Always. Whether it is with my university, my daughter’s school or the United States Army, I’m always volunteering. At least twice a month.
-
Nah. Don't really plan to. Not something I want to bother with because of... reasons.
-
I do it with my church whether it be the food bank, helping with peoples yards at their houses, or mission trips.
-
Done some volunteer work over the years, mostly as a maintenance guy. Also helped out from time to time at events and kiosks for non profit organisations. Nothing too big.

Our university makes it mandatory, so yes, I do volunteer. *waits for the irony to emerge.* But I also volunteer apart from my volunteering to be an usher for my church (greet, seating, handle money, security).

Edited by Crackerjack: 2/10/2018 2:17:59 AMI'm on a list of volunteers for the equivalent of soup kitchen, but since they have scheduled groups to do their meals, they tend to only ask for my help a couple times a year. I've also helped remodel houses in Mississippi, but haven't done that in the last five years.

I currently volunteer my time with the Youth Group my great aunt leads. I help plan and decorate for major events, though I'm primarily the IT, sound, and lighting guy. My younger brother is one of the youth leaders responsible for game activities for the weekly meetings. Because my father has a Class B CDL, he's the designated bus driver (once my license is up for renewal, I will also acquire a Class B CDL). My mother and sister decorate and plan events with my great aunt. In July, my great uncle, my father, my brother, and I will fly to Dominica for a one week long mission trip. We will help rebuild a church destroyed during last year's hurricane season. I also help family, friends, and coworkers with computer and tech issues.

Used to back in my boy scout days. Would do so now but I I've got bills to pay, so paid work takes priority.

I’ve got 500+ volunteer hours. Most of them for the Y

1 ReplyI don't do volunteer work and I don't plan to. That said, I wouldn't say no if someone asked me help out.
-
My volunteer work is literally only when it's required by my classes. Too focused on college and work currently. I'm not opposed to helping anyone in need if they ask me though.

1 ReplyIt's been a couple years since I have volunteered, but I started out serving food at a men's shelter. From there I started volunteering at our regional psychiatric centre where I would spend time chatting with low risk low security individuals who did not have any visitors.

I volunteered to help volunteers volunteer

8 RepliesEdited by Seraphim Crypto: 2/9/2018 10:26:24 PMI think it is obvious that I do volunteer work here on bungie.net. I consider it part of the topic since it does consume time and energy. Other than that, I'm also nursing my girlfriend's mother (or future mother-in-law, if you will) free of charge, although it's certainly straining my nerves again and again. She's wheelchair bound due to having Multiple Sclerosis, and it's in an advanced state. I lift her out of bed in the wheelchair and back in bed, I prepare food for her and do daily tasks she can't do anymore, like going to the store and such. I avoid doing certain tasks though that involve more privacy (washing etc.) or preparing medicine. Been doing that for almost 4 years now. I've been doing similar volunteer work in my past, working as a volunteer at a Home for the Elderly in the past, and in occupational therapy. EDIT: I should probably mention that nursing my girlfriend's mother is more or less a 24 hour job. I'm always on standby whenever she needs something, and I also get up at night to turn her around in bed, to prevent decubitus (bedsores). It's one of the main reasons why I can spend that much time playing video games or in this forum.

My whole family helped pack food for people in Haiti I think it was? Can't remember it was a while back.

1 ReplyNah. I'm a selfish, antisocial, egoistic, misanthropic person.

1 ReplyYup. Happy to give time where I can. Trail maintenance, Park clean ups, community activities etc. Not as much as I used to. Constraints of work and also having time for myself and family. I’m also an RPCV.

3 RepliesI did in my teens and 20's, but once life and family were a thing, that all changed. Now that my young ones are all graduated, I have been thinking about doing something, somewhere, but just haven't found that thing yet I feel compelled to do.
