Guardians Meet Here

Hey, Bungie Community. I know… I know… “Where have YOU been?” It’s true that this website was once exclusively my beat. That was long ago – an entire age in Internet years. These days, it’s no secret that I’m working more behind the scenes to empower people like Cozmo (and now Dylan!) to be successful on the center stage. I never stopped being aware of happens here, though. Serving the Guardians is a team effort, just like everything that happens at Bungie. Today, I wanted to share some additional thoughts on some of our forum moderation policies. Earlier this week, it was announced that forum participation requires a player to first reach The Farm in Destiny 2 with their Guardian (preferably a Warlock loyal to Dead Orbit, but you do what feels best). We also offered up a reminder that our Code of Conduct is very much alive and well, along with the army of community volunteers (know them as “The Ninjas”) who are sworn to help us uphold it. While the announcement may have sparked a new conversation, none of these were new ideas. The code of conduct has existed in some form since 2004 (or bust), serving a goal to set expectations for respectful behavior. Throughout the first years of Destiny, we had a similar minimum requirement that forum users must first reach the Tower after completing the first mission. (“Eyes up, Guardian.”) As a follow up to the launch of Destiny 2, we still needed to update the required milestone, and we finally got around to doing that thing. Old ideas. New game. Our goals have not been censorship or monetization. We seek to provide a valuable service to our community. This website is open to all players who have taken their first step into the world of Destiny, whether you use the full retail game or the free trial as your vehicle. As a Guardian, you are welcome to track your adventure, make new friends in groups, form up into teams as a clan, or just speak your mind on the forum. We’re not taking any steps to remove negative feedback about Destiny 2. In fact, if you’ve expressed a desire to see something added to the game, it’s very likely that it’s itemized on our Development Roadmap. If it’s not, lend your voice to the #Feedback forum. All we ask is that you meet us halfway as a player. Your community team is committed to the experience here. We can always do a better job of providing a respectable place where people can express sincere opinions about the games they play that we create. It’s true that there are forums on Bungie.net that have nothing to do with Destiny, but we believe that a player who is invested in the game we share is likelier to respect the forum (and the community) that we share. This is why the players of our games have often been deputized as Moderators – some of whom have gone on to work for the company. This is the clubhouse that we provide for the players of our games. You are as welcome here as you are in the world we’ve created for you to explore. If neither of those things appeal to you, there are other worlds than these on the Internet. We created this one, so we’re responsible for its upkeep. If you want to join us in that mission, I’m always suggesting that we could benefit from more Mentors or Ninjas to help us serve the player or keep the peace. Set a strong example, and you just might be the next addition to the teams that tend to their own garden. It is our hope that you have a good experience here. We maintain Bungie.net so that you can manage your hobby and make some friends that will enrich your journey. We also want to know you and learn from you. Thank you very much for reading this, and for being here. DeeJ, out.

      • It's nice that you protect yourselves from criticism but do nothing to actually improve the gameplay or community experience in there here and now. DDOSing, paid carries and cheating is still rampant in trials. Bugs from well before CoO flourish without any sign of fixes. The community dwindles and all you care about is making sure your forums look clean and you don't have to look at the well deserved mess you've turned this community into.
Thank you very much for reading this, and for being here.
I have about as much respect left for this dev team as you do for your playerbase; which is to say zero. You've been given ample time and oppertunity to fix mistakes, to take action. But you don't. Every step of the way, you don't. At first you just ignored it. Now that things are getting worse and actually affecting profits the best you have is platitudes and assurances that in the ~future~ changes will happen, fixes will come. That's not bloody good enough. Those changes should have already been in the works since the start. Half of them are addressing complaints people have had since the beta released. That's without even getting into the fact that you developed and released a sequel without learning anything from the original game. It's all so bewilderingly stupid. You threw out all the good ideas and replaced them with garbage no one wanted. When faced with an unhappy crowd your decision was what? To double down and make it worse? Shaders still suck. PVP shows no sign of improving - if anything it's going to get worse when you start punishing solo players who don't want to face yet another four stack of 3.0 K/D/A monsters. Abilities and supers are wet farts and take so long to charge there's no interest in them. Primaries are boring, half the power weapons are straight up redundant. You screwed with EXP gains and tried to hide it. Doubled the EXP requirement out of fear of people grinding too much - people enjoying your bloody game - and infringing on your wretched monetization. Even when you deign to give your players any kind of boon and lower the EXP threshold by even a completely unnoticeable amount it appears to be so deeply ingrained in you people to -blam!- the player over that you accidentally doubled it again instead! The problem with this community isn't trolls. It's not haters. It's not angry people who don't own the game. It's the people in charge who don't respect their players. Released a faulty product and continually disrespect the playerbase by doing nothing but promise more ~in the future~ and never acting. Lying and punishing players, giving them less and less of a reason to play the bloody game instead of making it actually fun and rewarding to play. Sure, I can make my armor masterworks now. But why? There's nothing to do. None of the content is fun or engaging enough for me to want to do any of it more than once or twice. Trials is a complete cluster -blam!- and you have zero interest in fixing it. PVP is a slow, abysmal slog and you only want to punish the people already not enjoying it. The raid is boring and we won't get any new raid content for months yet. I've done every strike so many times they're routine at this point and there's not interesting or unique reward for it - no strike exclusives or anything. Just more bloody tokens. I have thousands of the things. I don't need, or want, more.
Our goals have not been censorship
Says the company that just deliberately locked out a whole bunch of long time Bungie.net denizens. Sure, it might not have been a goal to begin with, but you did make it one after swathes of negative feedback and press.
or monetization
The moment you introduced Eververse was the realisation of a goal, stop kidding yourself and stop trying to kid us. Sure, in D1 it was innocent enough, but the slippery slope led you to a very conscious decision to implement Eververse in the way it was for D2. Had no-one complained, you never would have thought anything of it, and most likely would be sitting back right now congratulating each other on a job well done. Bungie, in a very calculated and deliberate way, geared this game to casuals and dare I say "mobile" gamers with monetization front of mind. Please stop denying it. I've defended this franchise and Bungie as a studio because I work in IT, and understand to some degree how the corporate machine works. Unfortunately, you guys got into bed with a company not unlike EA, and it shows. Working on D3 is no doubt due to heavy contractual obligations, and a desire to be able to reward the hard working developers, artists, musicians, testers and everyone else who cares about what they do, and what they create. Problem is though, that the corporate world changes people, and often not for the better. Realise that people do actually want to see this game succeed and for a glimpse of the Bungie of old... But you gotta get your priorities straight first. You've heard the old line "build it and they will come" right? Well I believe that to be true, but it's not quite complete... I believe in "build it right and they will come". Casuals don't buy DLC... They buy the base product, and either play and finish the story then walk away, or they play for a bit, and then walk away. You'd do well to remind Activision of that too. You are eroding your own community. Do so at your own peril.

        • It needs changes fast, people are running out of reasons to actually turn the game on. Guardians are all running around with the same loadout, same weapons. Only thing that's different is what colour they decide to use. It has to do better, reasons for patrols, lost sectors, adventures. Exotics are worthless, apart from 2,grenade launcher and fusion rifle. The rest underpowered and basically clutter up the vault, not even going to go their with shaders lol

So, in your last sentence you said, "....learn from you". Here's the lesson. First of all, the game is broken. Everyone knows it. But the few that stick around are only here for reset and PvP. There is nothing here to offer. PvP could be fun but the fact that were are limited and don't even have the choice of what game mode we want to play just sucks. When we are forced to play a 4th consecutive Supremacy mode is good enough reason to depart the match. I do not know why you guys made it that way, can you explain that? We've seen a 6v6 IB mode in your table of the future, but what about regular 6v6 crucible? Why did you guys change that? Are level advantages ever going to be enabled for any crucible mode? There are so many questions that you guys really haven't answered. A lot of us paid more than $100 for a game that was hyped to be a GOTY contender, a game that was going to surpass its predecessor. But in reality, you guys went completely backwards. So far these fixes you guys have deployed aren't what we've been bitching about. No one asked for mods, old exotics, 3oC, weapon and armor ornaments. What about better gameplay? What about freedom of choice? Pick our strikes, pick our pvp game, replay any mission, choose daily bounties and anything that involves gameplay and not cosmetics! I know you guys are doing challenges for raids and nightfalls, which is cool i guess but looks like we'll have to see. But remember not everyone is a fireteam player and don't have a clan or consistent teams for raids and Nightfalls. Some people like doing bounties and strikes as a solo player with randoms. It's been like 5 months and almost anyone will tell you the game is still stale, but some of us still have hope in you. Cheers.

        • Honestly, not many people are upset that you can't post in the D2 topic if you don't own the game. That at least has some semblance of logic. However, could you please explain the decision for the axe of offtopic and gaming as well? Both are explicitly for non-destiny talk but still require a purchase of the new shiny game? What about old Bungie fans that stuck around just for the wacky community?

            • Good to hear from you again DeeJ. As often happens with Bungie in recent months (years), it’s not always about WHAT is said; it’s about WHEN it’s said. PR issues that continue long term are usually an indication that there are leadership or corporate problems. As bad as moral is right now, it’s time to show and promote goodwill weekly. It has always amazed me that Bungie consistently announces controversial subjects with such poor timing.

"Cozmo and Dylan to be successful on the center stage".. wait who is dylan? Is that dmg04? I know who cozmo is but we never see any questions answered by these people. Dmg04 hopped on the forums for 5 minutes I think like last month and gave some bs damage control responses to like 4 ppl. Which IS the most interaction a bungie "employee" has ever given to the forum. All 3 of you are joke. GET A REAL JOB. P.s. Center stage..Lmfao

            • I mean... on (digital)paper, sounds all well and good. In practice, when your game is in a controversial downward spiral in the eyes of the fanbase... doesn't look so good. Listen, I'm 7th column. I've been a bungie fan and supporter since Marathon. In no way do I believe bungie is malicious, in no way do I think yall are anything other than fellow gamers trying to do your best in a shitty circumstance... but since the moment you signed on with Activision and turned against the Xbox fanbase that made you the heavy hitter in development you guys are after buying your independence out from Microsoft in order to provide fun games "for all" (something so many of us whom think console loyalty and playing favorites is stupid were excited for), it's been downhill. Some of it, those whom have read court papers and actually done research into what happened totally understand. Most of it, we do not. I shed a single tear when I got my septagon tattoo covered. Week by week, my sighs grow longer and deeper. You guys really, really need to think about what you're doing, where you're steering this boat... because step 7 ain't happening at this rate. This forum has become a monument to all your sins.

If neither of those things appeal to you, there are other worlds than these on the Internet.' Seriously? Do you know how self righteous that makes you look? Your head must be so far up your backside it must hurt. How dare you say that if I don't like it go somewhere else. I have every right to come here whether its give you positive or negative feedback. I have every right to be angry with the lies and deceit you have spun since D2 release. I have invested my time and more importantly my money into your company and game so yeah, unless you ban me then I am free to come here. I adored D1 with a passion and played every day on multiple consoles yet now I cannot even come here without feeling anger. The XP fiasco did it for me, you knew what you were doing and to me that makes you untrustworthy, so for me that was the final nail in the coffin. It makes you wonder what else you are covering up until some eagle eyed player catches you out. Your company got so big you thought you were untouchable, that's your biggest mistake, you think you can manipulate how things are and get away with it. Anyone who sits so high on a pedestal will eventually come crashing down........and you will. In all the years I've been gaming, I've never wanted a refund for any game Ive bought, even ones Ive not liked, but if it wasn't for the fact I game share and my partner still plays, yours would be the first.

                      • People are upset because two general/generic "clubhouses" on the BUNGIE forums were put behind a wall that requires the purchase of Destiny 2. People are upset because D2 was released as a BETA after 3 years of improvements to D1. People are upset because 5 months in, D2 is stale and underdeveloped. And most of all people are upset because you guys seem to be so out of touch with the community that you think what appear to be empty promises and platitudes are a better response to the community concerns than ACTUAL progress. 3 and a half years in and we STILL can't sort our vault by name or power level. 3 and a half years in and there apparently was no actual plan for endgame in a semi-persistent shared world game. But sure, let's tweak the forum requirements and talk about end of year improvements, in February... Can we have our money back until end of year too? We promise to pay up again once the game is finished. I mean, you trust us, right? For every vapid complaint on these forums, there are 5 legitimate concerns being brought up by people, some of which have spent close to $100 about the state of things based on expectations set by the community managers AND the developers. How about a list of proposed mods for the updated system? Maybe let the payers discuss the potential of these additions. Maybe a poll for which exotic to bring back next? Map discussion? Strike modifiers? IDEAS that the team has for improvements to all of the partially finished systems that exist in game, maybe see which ones the community would be interested in you pursuing? Bottom line, instead of platitudes and poor business decisions, how about you actually spark a discussion. Maybe then, players would be too busy talking about the future to break the precious "rules of conduct" that have suddenly become so damn important...

I am really disappointed with d2 and don’t play hardly at all any more but I do drop by these forums from time to time to see if the game is improving. It’s totally fair in my opinion that in order to share your feedback on this forum you should at least have played the game some.

Wow, this is why I never spend my time here, every single post that I’ve read so far has just been haters not only hating on the game but have been selfish jerks to its creators as well, this game has its issues but so did the last game, and this part of the community was just as bratty then too. I mean come on! Do you guys even have a basic understanding of diplomacy?? You don’t get what you want by raging and whining like a toddler until it’s given to you. You do as Deej said: MEET THEM HALFWAY. They’re human too, and probably more understanding than you think. So before you post hate messages and death threats, think about what you like about the current game, then post SUGGESTIONS. We may be the consumers, but hating and screaming for changes didn’t change d1, and that sure won’t change for d2
