Well, the Tacoma will run for 200,000+ easily. The Explorer won't.

Actually, not true. Most Ford's are over 300,000 mile vehicles, if you do the basic maintenance. Some do have certain issues, usually first year productions or first year of a new transmission or engine, but that is something that plagues all car manufacturers. The old guard of Japanese cars stopped putting as high of quality into their vehicles in 1998. 1997 was the last year of the unkillable Japanese cars. It is an old hold over from the late 70's, and most of the 80's. A lot of the American car companies had issues, the government came in and told them to add emissions equipment, then basically told them where to put it, which caused a lot of problems. Then you add a computer into the mix and yeah, you can see where this is going, lol. Also, people forget this, some people just have bad luck with a brand. I can not keep a Nissan running to save my life. I have the same problems with the Ford 351 Windsor motors. Also, Oldsmobiles are wreck magnets for me. Yet I have 1990 Ford Ranger that has almost 700,000 miles on the body now. The second motor is dying and has been for the last 50,000 miles, but it is still going. I am actually thinking about making it into a little hot rod truck, lol. The only real problem I have had with that truck, is the stupid power steering system. I do not know if the remanufactured parts just are not up to snuff or if the fluid is just not good enough. This last time, I went synthetic and it did a lot better. Sorry for the wall of text, I am a car guy and my step father is a bad ass mechanic who taught me a lot.

  • Then why are toyota and lexus consistently in the lead for most reliable vehicles modern day?

Firstly, you do understand that Lexus is a Toyota right? So there is nothing different except the price tag and the fact that they know Americans are stupid enough to pay more for a rebadged Camry. Second, please highlight where I said they were bad. Ford and Toyota are right now the 2 highest rated car manufacturers as of a couple of years ago.

I didn't say you said they were bad, but you said they stopped being reliable after 1997 which just isn't true.

I never said they stopped being reliable, go re-read what I said again. Also, everyone does not know that. If everyone knew Lexus and Toyota were the same, I would not have asked that.
