No more silent protagonist

I'm not entirely sure if this particular feature has been suggested before - I'm not sure whether it would be possible to implement to be honest - but I know there are plenty of players who have for a long time wished our guardians had a voice in Destiny. I have always wondered why our guardians never say anything, and why we can't decide what our guardians say. I get the rationale for silent protagonists may be to ensure players are never presented with a situation where their character says something they would never say, but the notion of becoming legend without ever speaking to anyone has never sat right with me. One of my favourite games in recent years was Firewatch, mostly because of how the game implemented dialogue choice and reactions. For those not familiar with Firewatch, in a similar manner to Mass Effect you could choose what your character would say in conversation with the other character, and in reaction to various discoveries throughout your gameplay. Critically, it allowed you to say nothing, especially if you took too long to choose your response (getting rid of that awkward Mass Effect mid-conversation tea break). I think this would be of immense benefit to future story progression throughout Destiny. Too often I zone out completely from the dialogue going on in the middle of a mission, because I'm never involved in it, and therefore I may as well just rush ahead to find something else to shoot. If we had a means of being involved in the discussion somehow by hitting or holding one of the emote buttons, I know I would feel far more involved in the mission, pay some attention to the character interactions, and less irritated at ghost's clueless responses not reflecting my own views on whatever is going on (sidenote, why is Ghost so clueless sometimes, isn't it some form of AI capable of accessing a wealth of knowledge in a fraction of a second?). Again, I'm not entirely sure this would be possible to implement without a serious overhaul of the game code, but it is something to be mindful of. At least find someone to voice the various male/female races to write some dialogue into the cutscenes for future content. I'm so sick of feeling like a passenger in the story, despite being "that guardian [Zavala] keeps talking about".

  • *crickets* Does anybody agree/disagree? I mean, this may not be of paramount importance right now, but surely having some (even illusory) sense of individual character development would keep some people more engaged in the story, the universe, and ultimately the game itself.
