It sometimes feels like Bungie tried so hard to make Destiny different from Halo that they forgot what made Halo such an amazing FPS. For instance, Halo 3 was extremely popular for years after its release because of its well-designed multiplayer. Halo 3 had over 12 ranked and unranked matchmaking playlists, including big team battle, team slayer, team doubles, team objective, FFA, etc.; Destiny 2 multiplayer has no skill-based ranking system and only 2-3 matchmaking playlists with very little gametype variety. Halo 3 let you forge customized maps and create custom game types; I don't think Destiny 2 even let's you play private matches. It sometimes feels like matchmaking is treated like a secondary feature on D2. A decent ranking system, more customizability, and a wider variety of matchmaking playlists would greatly improve the PVP experience on D2 in my opinion.

And after about a year, the special playlists had hardly anyone in them. Matchmaking SUCKED. The only playlist that routinely had enough players to get good matches in was Social. I played it till the servers were shut down. it was good but looking back, hated when host left, lag switching was real (and easy since all you needed was a laptop to figure out how to steal host) and a plethora of other things. What kept me playing Halo 3 over the years was going in with a team of 5-6 and betraying each other. The MP had gone to trash after a year.

I think you're mixing up Halo 2 and Halo 3, because I remember it quite differently.

I remember it quite differently. Some of my best H3 times were had on BTB and other playlists. I agree that there were a few too many but I think having a bit of variety and customs would go a long way.

Pretty sure part of the reason Halo 3 was popular for years after its release was due to Red vs. Blue.
