The Cosmodrome is based off the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Southern Kazakhstan. The Tower from D1 is hypothesized to be in Chile. No verification to the truth of that though. The EDZ is where Germany, Austria and Switzerland border. Salzwerk is German for Salt Mine. Zervreilahorn is a street sign seen in the EDZ which is the name of one of the mountains in the Swiss Alps. Dark Forest is likely a nod to Black Forest in Austria. No idea where the Tower in D2 is. Easy assumption is the Traveler never moved and we saw other towers in D1 besides the one we were in, so it's still Chile but no real proof of it.

  • And we can enter Zervreilahorn into Google maps and see exactly where that mountain is. It's in Southeastern Switzerland, just a few miles north of the Italian border.

From where you spawn into the Tower, turn around and go stand on the netting where you see ships hovering. Look up and to the right. You'll barely be able to see the remnants of the old tower. The "Tower" in D2 is a wall section right beside the original Tower.

  • I can't recall the exact quote from the game, but I'm pretty certain Hawthorne at one point mentions crossing the ocean (I believe its during 1AU when talking about the assault to recapture the city). Implying that an ocean separates the farm and the tower/last city. We know for certain that the farm is near the EDZ, as the shard is visible from the farm. The EDZ is obviously in Europe (so I guess that answers the OP's question either way).

  • We moved to a tower closer to the traveler

  • No foolin'? I was positive the Cosmodrome was right outside the Tower. Weren't the walls there the City walls? I remember hearing that the House of Devils were used as a story to scare kids from leaving the City, and they largely occupied the Cosmo. The ones in the EDZ appear to be House of Wolves - though it doesn't formally say for sure, of course. But that would indicate to me more reason to believe the Cosmo and old Tower were very spatially connected. Pure speculation, of course. And man, I appreciate everyone chiming in. Really helps me piece this all together :)

  • This. I felt it was pretty clearly established that the wall in the cosmodrome is one of the walls of the city very clearly implying that the city is directly adjacent to the cosmodrome

  • An interesting article of the how and why Chile is the likely D1 tower location. https://www.polygon.com/2015/1/20/7862009/destiny-tower-last-city-location-science-sun Although there are signs to point to us being literally right outside of the Cosmodrome. The wall, Twilight Gap, House of Devils you mentioned. But there are also ingame signs that we're not right outside of the City, the fact we're going into orbit to get to the Tower right at the beginning of D1. It wouldn't make sense for the ghost to take us into orbit after resurrecting us if we could have just walked to the Tower. I think it's hard to pinpoint the location of the Last City and Tower because of the contradictions made in the game itself about it. And then there's this that say it might be the Phillippines - https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/3354977

  • I’m the wrath of the machine, weren’t they planning to take the siege engine down the wall towards the tower?

  • Someone claiming to be the dev for the sun cycle says he entered the co-ords wrong and it should be northern hemisphere not southern. This would place the Last City around Pokhara Nepal, home of the Peace Pagoda and one of the last Sherpa stations for the Himalayas.

  • That's intense, man. That's pretty compelling evidence - all of it - that we were never in Russia when in the Tower. But then the question becomes: how did we walk from Chile to Switzerland, or perhaps more puzzling, from the Philippines to Switzerland? I thought my initial post was pretty dumb from a lore standpoint, but it's quickly becoming really interesting, if only from all these tangental questions that arise from it.

  • In D2 there no longer any Fallen Houses. Nearly all the Houses have disbanded and joined together.

  •
In D2 there no longer any Fallen Houses. Nearly all the Houses have disbanded and joined together.
I thought the fallen in D2 were all from the House of Dusk and led by Prince Uldren Sov?

  • Oh, wowzers! When did that happen? I'll admit - I kinda stopped paying attention to the Fallen, what with all else going on in Destiny's storyline.

  • We wreaked the Fallen so hard that none of the Houses are strong enough to stand alone. So they've all joined together for survival. It's hinted at that the House of Kings has taken up leadership of the new "super house" as the House of Kings was the one house we screwed with the least and retains the most power.

People say it's a different tower than the one we were in in D1 (and it does look different) however if you go down by the Bazaar there is an "investigate" audio clip that says "this is where Eva Lavonte used to setup shop" which would indicate we are in the same tower we always were. Very confusing (which isn't really a surprise given the piss-poor development of the game.

  • That part confuses me as well, our Tower was obviously destroyed, they made a new quarters for the Speaker with a ghost investigate to tell you. But then there's that line you mentioned.

  • There’s a big smashed up tower right next to the current “tower” (which is clearly not a tower at all but just a section of wall) which I always assumed to be “the tower” from destiny one. I just assumed that the entire population of the tower simply moved a few hundred meters down the wall while the tower was being reconstructed

  • I think the conclusion we can draw is that Bungie cares far less about a consistent narrative than their customers

  • Listen I’ve said this almost since day one of the destiny one beta. Bungie makes the absolute best shooting games in existence. But they need to leave the actual implementation, questing, structure, etc. to somebody else and just focus on the mechanics of the game

  • You can see our old tower from the new location on the City. Stand near Zavala and look to the left.

I guess it's a possibility.

  • The "new Tower" is on the City wall right next to the "old Tower". If you look up and to the left you can see the Tower. You can tell it's the same Tower because you can see there is only one of the big spike towers up there. If you recall during the Homecoming mission the other one was broken off.
