They need to put out a test utility of some sort so people can verify what is safe or not before they try playing the game. Ideally, would be nice if there was a benchmark utility that could have this testing integrated somehow. This way, people who are doing something like using simple overlays to monitor stats while tweaking their system don't get caught up in the dragnets. Sure, they named some specific things that will and won't be tolerated... but that only helps those who take the time to research the issue before they try to play. At the VERY least, it needs to be tested and notification given DURING the install and/or launching of the game.

 • How about just releasing a game that doesn't ban players for stuff that's ok to use in competitive games like overwatch and Counterstrike?
How about just releasing a game that doesn't ban players for stuff that's ok to use in competitive games like overwatch and Counterstrike?
It's an age old problem with homebrew stuff. The average user of some apps would likely never intend to do anything malicious, but the potential may exist for exploitation. Can recall a lot of chatter over Windower back in the day for FFXI--had a bunch of stuff that was just quality of life changes to get around "PS2 Limitations" issues with the emulation, but some people latched onto the code and made things that could give people an advantage over people that didn't use it. Not necessarily the application itself that was the problem... but how the user chose to use it. SE's official response was that it was a violation of terms of use, and could lead to a ban. But... off the record, it was mostly ignored unless there was evidence of cheating--but if someone was going around flaunting their use of the tools, they might come down on them. So it sort of became a fight-club kind of thing... first rule of Fight Club---don't talk about Fight Club. Similar things happened even further back with trainers and such. Blizzard's own IP's got hammered by them in their early days. The Diablo trainers were pretty harsh--Finger of God and Armegeddon hacks, duping hacks, tele-walk... all kinds of stuff that just completely unbalanced the online experience. So I can see their desire to keep a tight grip on things in that regard... already got two strikes against them from the net code when it comes to the PC environment. But if they are going to insist on being this rigid, they need to provide a means for the legit players to protect themselves against false-positives on bans. I remember ATI used to have overlay functions built into the drivers (haven't used ATI in a long time). It might even still be a thing for basic stuff like FPS and GPU temp monitoring, which would be a perfectly legit reason to use an overlay but might trigger a ban depending on just what all is going on under the hood. They really need to find a better way to manage the whole thing. Miss the days when companies used to put out their own benchmarks for specific games. Was a great way to get our systems prepped for new releases. I still have some burned to DVD's like Last Remnant, a couple Final Fantasy benchmarks... even some old testing tools for 3DFx cards and OpenGL stuff. Good stuff for some basic stress testing and basic tweaking when setting up a new system. If they could cobble something like that together and incorporate the overlay detection schema into it so they could warn players before hand, it could go a long way towards avoiding a lot of this mess. At the very least, during installation they need to be beating them over the head about the issue if they aren't going to implement some sort of test to verify all is good prior to them starting to play.
