Comparing Tokens and Legendary Marks, the downsides of the new system.
Compare the system to Destiny 1's Legendary Mark system.
Mark System:
After the Vanguard/Crucible Mark System was fixed we were left with the Legendary Mark System which greatly improved Destiny 1 in my opinion. Marks could be obtained in large amounts through certain activities so many times per day/week (Ex. Heroic Strikes and Weekly Crucible Playlists), and dismantling legendaries and exotics, and doing certain bounties. With a good drop rate for legendaries they were fairly easy to get all around. Marks were used to upgrade legendary and exotic gear and buy Weapons and Armor from Faction Vendors. The system of exchanging marks for rewards was a set reward of your choice, if you wanted Vanguard Gauntlets you save up your marks and bought gauntlets. If you wanted the Dead Orbit Scout Rifle you saved your marks, pleged your alligence and bought the Scout Rifle. It was a really good set loot system, you chose what you wanted, usually if it had a good roll or you just haven't gotten it through RNG at that point, and the loot system with Marks wasn't based on RNG either which was very nice.
Token System:
Tokens are gained through... Well everything. Obviously certain activities drop specific tokens that go towards specific NPC's (I'm not calling them vendors since they don't have may actual inventory) that can reward different gear based on the NPC (Ex Zavala takes Vanguard tokens and gives Vanguard gear). Crucible tokens are earned through the Crucible, Raid tokens are earned through the Raid, etc. You can earn extra through challenges and events like faction rally. This seems nice at first but there is a major problem overall. Every package earned from Tokens is completely RNG based (Not to mention the high rate for released drops over New ones). I could turn in 200 tokens to FailSafe and there would be no guarantee I would get 1 thing I wanted. It gives me little motivation to go out and collect tokens all day knowing I still only have a chance at getting the one piece of armor I'm missing out of a complete set.
The Token system also caused Vendor inventories to dissapere completely, and get left with a bar, an engram picture and a reputation bar. Buying gear is completely out of the question in this game and it's pretty sad to see how far we came and how much we left behind. Even ships and sparrows are being left to microtransactions. Legendary Shards are now aquired from dismantleing legendaries. They are used for infusion (Which stops after so long and you can only build up shards) and Xur who now has little to nothing in his inventory and sells exotics that almost everyone already has. Now we're left with a mass stockpile of shards with pretty much no use due to it as well.
