Speedruns In Destiny 2

Hey everyone! I'm a veteran PC MMO player (Also Diamond/Plat OW) who use to be very focused on PvP however I did do most if not all PvE content in all PC MMOs. I've hit 2400+ in both WoW and Wildstar Arena (top 10 medic player), was in a top Global Agenda guild (4th best Medic player in game), and the list goes on. I got into speedrunning in The Division and Warframe, however due to how gear scales in the game, records are constantly in flux, which is a good and bad thing. When I found out how Light Level works in Destiny 2, I felt it would be a great, if not the best Online MMO/Game to compete in for speedruns, because there is always a cap on just how much damage you can do in raids and certain events. I wanted to answer some head-scratchers to better inform the community as a whole about speedruns, why you may want to compete in it, and why Destiny 2/Bungie should support it directly. First, I'm sure plenty of you have seen the Leviathan Raid Speedrun (https://www.speedrun.com/run/y8qjqqxy) and currently the speedrun community is competing on Speedrun.com, which is a third-party community organized option with limited options. Second, most people will immediately say, "well no ones interested in speedruns and no one cares for it.", to that I have to disagree with (http://gdqstat.us/?series=0). Although Summer Games Done Quick 2017 Stats is distributed among many titles and no "online" games, it shows the interest in speedrunning. Third, speedruns are often "defined". Meaning it's not just a bunch of people just claiming "Oh, I did it this fast." but that there are certain rules that need to be followed in order to "legitimize" the run. If you go to New Game (Solo) it is fairly defined on what you can and can not do. You can view these rules in the Top Right [View Rules]. As time passes, more and more distinctions will be made based on the community and runners. Fourth, as many who are familiar with speedruns, there are issues that as a community has to be combated. This is often use of exploits/cheats that you see in older games that you typically see speedran. Again this is the dynamic difference of an online title vs a offline title, it will be updated and exploits/cheats will be removed which typically leads a run to become "invalid". On top of this, it's up to the community to state if such an exploit/cheat is allowed. Typically this is done on the speedrun platform forums or by the devs (if directly supported) in which it's decided if it's allowed or not. Lastly, the reason why some or many more players should try to compete in speedruns is because it's an ever evolving challenge, directly supported or not. The great thing about this challenge is players typically have to upload their run, giving you a chance to review/see what they did differently and adjust, much like any sport. Even if you don't decide to come back and claim your 1st place run, you still have a record and attempt to show to friends/fellow gamers. Not everyone can have the time off for World Firsts and not everyone is a great PvPer, but literally anyone can do speedruns because it's about execution and knowledge. As far as Bungie/Destiny 2 directly supporting speedruns, there are a few items that would greatly help: 1. Seasonal Boards that timed out as major or new content was added (next raid for example) - This means when the 2nd raid comes out, the first season is saved and finalized and the 2nd season begins with times for the 1st and 2nd raid. (Very similar to D3 or PoE Hardcore Ladders) 2. Rewards even just cosmetic for players competing. There are tons of Destiny 2 players who don't touch PvE or don't touch PvP for end-game and there is a lush reward system already in Destiny 2 (some argue too lush). This is yet another event for players to either just try out for an engram or actually compete and still get something for their time. At the end of the season, a rare cosmetic only available for that season could be given to all competed and a separate for those who place in the top 5 runs. 3. In-Game recording is already available to PS4, XBOX1, and the Blizzard Client, all that would be needed is to submit that footage with the run to be considered for the Bungie ran leaderboards. Thus players could also review footage from the leaderboards and the community could help police exploits/cheats that the community or devs feel is not acceptable. Please feel free to add on anything that you feel would help or improve.
