The new taken

It seems there is a new way to "take" individuals. Oryx would take things and essentially present them with the choice to leave their worries and fears behind, cut them out of themselves, and become strong. It looked completely different than how they are taking vex. It seems like a forced conversion. I believe this answers why it is now suicidal to take the vex. They are being taken by force, and every ounce of their being is fighting back. When Oryx took them, it was their choice. As the book of sorrows put it they took the knife, and cut out what was "holding them back". Maybe I'm completely out in left field with this. But you gotta admit at least, things aren't being taken in the same manner they used to be. Seems like a forced process.

  • Is anything new being taken? I thought because Oryx died nothing new could be taken unless his power was reclaimed. I thought the only reason the taken still exist is because they pursue the travelers light aggressively yet aimlessly. This is also why the d2 taken don't have updated models, they're still the original enemies. Fallen house of winter, original centurion models, original vex models. I believe that wasn't lazy design and that it was the devs making a smart decision. This leads me to believe there is, at present, no new method of taking. I also feel as though when oryx offered this choice to those he took, some would refuse. There would always be some to refuse, especially among the cabal. And if I were a near-immortal alien god with inter-dimensional power of world crushing proportions, I wouldn't let these assholes go if they deny my offer, and I doubt oryx would either. So while the vex may not make a choice for themselves, perhaps there was still a method oryx used to force all vex and/or theoretically unwilling cabal into their taken forms. It just doesn't seem likely that it would always be a choice

  • Well people are going with a theory that’s it’s one of oryxs sisters namely savathun which makes sense after all oryx and his sisters did wage war on each other

    • I really don't think there's much else to say than that both of these methods are forced. D1's taken motto: "Join or Die". D2's taken motto: "Join or Die"

      • Being taken is a forced process. Oryx takes them into the Deep and tortures them until they give in and then the darkness fully consumes them. This seems more crude as it's likely whoever is trying to take them doesn't have the full power of the taken throne. Or has only recently gotten it.

        • I think the difference is that the Taken are attempting to convert the Vex (and/or other races) on their own via whatever manner is available to them, whereas Oryx - with all his power - was responsible for converting the Original Taken. Oryx's method was more of an offer of power that required surrendering one's will to the darkness and resulted in metamorphosis or a type of rebirth into a more "perfect" form. The Taken appear to be practicing some sort of forced corruption.

          • The new Taken are like a virus of sorts. They invade our plane and steal the will of their victims. Left unchecked, the blights would take all life in the universe.

          • My interpretation of it is that Savathun is still trying to figure out how to "take". Oryx learned how from the Tablets of Ruin, which he gained by killing a worm god and speaking with the Darkness. Savathun never accomplished this, so her only way to learn is to reverse engineer the Taken that came under her command after Oryx's death. As the smartest and most cunning of the three siblings, she is learning how to take just by experimenting with different methods.
