Wargames, Lightsurge Storms, and Challenges of the Lightless

Breakout from: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/232402831?sort=0&page=0 Idea for new game modes in Crucible. Let me explain (I've got time). Challenge(s) of the Lightless: Guardians had their light taken away. Without it, the city fell. Normal people, like Soraya Hawthorne, rose up alongside lightless guardians to take back the city and free the Traveler (with the help of one particular super-special-snowflake). To say the least, it brought to light (hah) the importance of the strictly martial elements of combat. Should a Guardian's light ever wane again, or if the Traveler were lost entirely, they all should be prepared to defend humanity in spite of it. This would be similar, but more thematically relevant than D1's hard mode Crucible matches. No radar, no shields, no health regen, and no light-based abilities (to include double jumps). I also think it would be interesting to have environmental hazards placed on existing maps for this particular game mode to up the ante even more. As a crazy extra layer, this could also tie in tightly with single player themes and have Trials-quality themed gear rewards! Let me explain...again... There could be an associated faction called the Lightless. These would be normal humans that, in spite of the Traveler's reawakening (or perhaps due to it) are questioning why such a benevolently perceived being would wait through humanity's most recent hardship to awaken. They quietly refuse to return to the city and even avoid the safety of the farm, choosing to make it as their own group among the dangers of the solar system. In an attempt to point out the weakness of dependence on such a being, the Challenges would consist of guardians fighting without using the light to aid them. Gear would also fit in thematically. Lightless gauntlets would sacrifice grenade or elemental melee abilities in favor of a huge boost to range or damage for normal melee. Chests would keep you from signaling enemy radar in exchange for shields. Helmets could trade a super for immunity to headshots or something along those lines. The theme being that you sacrifice light abilities for raw physical ability. Wargames: Guardians have to be ready for anything, and they should know the best ways to be ready. Enter Wargames, a Crucible mode that is simulated with the help of a guardian's ghost. In this method of Crucible training, guardians now have the opportunity to simulate weapons and armor, even if they don't personally own them. Players get a short time before each round of a match to specify a loadout. Generic simulations of legendary armor and weapons are allotted a choice of any simulated modification. Alongside these are simulations of unique legendary and exotic weapons and armor, allowing guardians to test the heights of what an optimized loadout can do in battle. This is an idea I like because it makes Crucible more useful and engaging. Players could now come test their play-styles using hypothetical loadouts, allowing them to chase (grind) for a particular goal. All gear would be simulated at the same light level and limits on exotic gear (1 weapon, 1 armor) would still apply. It would essentially be a fun "what if" playground showing what players can strive for (under the watchful eyes of RNGesus). Maybe it could even help catch bugs or broken gear abilities earlier since it wouldn't rely on gear saturation building up over time across the player population. A referee themed ghost shell would also be a pretty cool reward drop, not going to lie there. Lightsurge Storms: Essentially mayhem, with a few enhancements. No caps on exotic gear ( when you queue up for the mode, you are able to equip as many exotic items as you want, can't enter other activities until back within normal equipment loadout requirements. Shields doubled with faster recharge. Big addition would be prism modifier applied to match, cycling through damage types as the storm churns. Pure madness, pure fun.

  • the lightless would be an awful game mode with no health region with D2’a slow ttk even if you get the jump on someone they’re still going to turn around and take half your health bar before they die/

    • I like it but lightless mode will be a sweat pool for that gear, which will be either over powered or utterly useless.

      • Lightless wouldn't go with the lore. We would be outrighted killed if we die without light.
