Destiny 2 gets a free pass from critics.

But not users. Average critic score is up 10% since D1 came out (A whopping 86% now), but user score is down 0.2points from it's predecessors 6.1. Which is more in line of a score I'd personally give as well. Were critics paid off?

  • If you compare this game at launch to D1 at launch, it's no surprise. D1 was a mess of unfinished ideas, lacking story, extremely few activities and a single saving grace being the raid. D2 has so far launched with much more content than D1 did, and is more complete overall. Bungie improved on all the biggest complaints of D1 at launch. No surprise at all it's getting a better critic score. Its a better initial product.

    • I don't think so... I think that the ones who aren't enjoying the game are just really upset that they are not enjoying it (and more vocal, which they have every right to be). Personally I've no negative feedback to give about the game. Sure there are some thing that when I heard of them and did sigh a few times, but gotta go with the flow right?

    • I think D1 fans who played the game from launch to AoT don't like destiny 2 because it feels watered down compared to the old game. I've noticed that most of the complaints are by self-proclaimed "veterans". This could be a reason that the scores differ.

Metacritic, and the whole review culture stemming from scores, is a blight on the industry. It honestly needs to die, along with game journalism. There's very few reviewers out there that actually put effort and care into it. It's not coming from any of the popular ones either. Also people are stupid, taking them seriously is a mistake.

      • I said during the beta that IGN would score D2 a 8.6 regardless of quality. They scored an 8.5. Since most developers bonuses are tied to meta critic scores, I'm not surprised. I fully endorse angry joes review. I find it hard to disagree with anything in that review.

The "professional" critics don't have to spend their own money on the game. I'd go a lot easier on every game if I was given it for free, or made money by playing it.

              • Polls generally have 2 types of people when they take them. This is actually very well displayed in the show the office. Michael asks him how he's currently feeling, and how he usually feels, after a very minimal bad situation happened. Jim replies, I'm feeling like a 4, but I usually feel like a 7. Michael replies, I usually feel like a 10, but right now I feel like a 0. Jim is being reasonable, non emotional. Michael is exaggerating and only has 2 feelings, love and hate. You can't get a real review from a guy like Michael. These are also the people who usually post reviews, because their 2 feelings are so strong, they have to share them. Jim says, my feelings aren't really that important. It's not so bad I should share it, it's not so good I should share it. The classic "trolls/haters and fanboys" think everything is amazing or horrible and those feelings usually lead to more articulation

                • Are you naive? Lol do you read metacritic user reviews. Ive seen a game get 0/10 because it wasnt 60fps or something. Not to insult but you dont ever look at those reviews its full of trolls and fanboys on both sides (fanboy praise, troll child nonpraise). Fake 10's and fake 0's. No legitimate scoring. A few here or there like a 4 or 7 with well thought out pro/ con bullet points. Read those if you want but never look at number.

Ofc they did (pay for good rating), it's pretty much the normal way this goes afaik, all big names will pay for this, or damn well try to, it's some of the best marketing you can get. Ratings are a massive factor for sales. It's old news you should not trust ratings from places like these. The pressure alone from Activision not sharing games with you anymore because you gave one of their games bad rating is enough for most to kiss their ass. Joe was honest in his own way, and because of that he was not invited back, he was clearly disconnected. Many of these sites can't handle that, or don't want to. Another factor is that Destiny 2 is a pretty good game, most people will just play from start to end game and then rate it, for which even I would rate it a solid rating. The issue for me, and I think most, is when you continue that end game part, which for me honestly is what Destiny is and should be about. The initial campaign is really meaningless for me, it's something I push through to get to the end game, but this is where the game totally falls apart quickly. It currently feels like a classic linear story fps, with a delayed final boss battle (the raid), and an empty sandbox with tons of potential but very little actually delivered. Now because of this I would rate very low, like 5 or 6 out of ten, but that is subjective and in context of the end game. I still feel the game is solid, it's just totally not what is promised and how it's being sold and thus how I expect it will be. It's like someone telling you he will make you hamburgers, but gives you pancakes instead, solid pancakes sure, but not a frkn hamburger.

Amazon customer reviews on both the American site and the UK site give a better reflection of the game. Just weed out the "1 star delivery didn't arrive/was late" reviews and you'll mostly get reviews from people who actually played the game. Metacritic is too mainstream and a troll haven.

                  • No, most critics are not super biased and give a 1 rating, when they should give a rating of 6.

                  • Critic reviews are industry paid. User reviews are insane. Neither really tell you anything.

                      • While some critics may have been paid in some fashion, it's hard to believe that all of them are. Chances are high that they're not holding it to the standard of its predecessor and judging it on its own merits. Possibly not even looking at its long term viability. Users on the other hand? I'm sure many are basing it on their emotions, which isn't unreasonable, but it leads to different criteria for their scores. For example: Critics Criteria: Overall gameplay Amount of Activities Story/Campaign UI Users Criteria: Gameplay Long term viability No more God roll weapons Raid sucks Loot isn't viable after a certain light level Different criteria for both. Add in some paid critics and some troll critics and you get what we have.

                      • Did you read the negative reviews? There are dozens of people just trolling with 0/10 reviews for stupid reasons. And a lot of them are obviously from people who haven't played the game. If meta-critic was smart enough to put in a system where you have to prove that you own or have played the game, the score would be a lot higher. But as of right now, someone who has never played the game can make as many accounts as they want and give multiple trolly 0/10 reviews, which is what it looks like happened. If you removed all of the 0/10 reviews, and all of the 10/10 reviews (just to be fair to both extremes), you would probably get a number a lot higher than D1. I personally gave the game an 8/10 and I stand by that.

                      • I actually don't because the game doesn't begin to fall apart until you get to end game and around 270 Power, that is when you realize how little content is left to progress and keep things interesting especially with the lack of notable rewards. I hardly doubt that any of the critics got to this point prior to their reviews but perhaps if they revisit reviews at a later date after further play I'm sure the scores would come down.

                      • User reviews can be even worse than critic reviews. Even though I don't fully depend on either when it comes to making a decision. I've seen people post stuff about games they don't even play.
