Pro tip, if you scroll over the actual words efficiency and defense you will see the meaning. Basically, efficiency costs less ammo to use at the loss of defense, where as if defense is high, you will take less damage, but your ammo will run out quicker.

I've known destiny to be tricky with this sort of situation....

The higher the efficiency the less ammo used, but you will also take more damage. Higher defense means you will take less damage, but consume ammo faster.
