Two Paths

I realize the Age of Triumph was intended to be the community's end of Destiny 1 celebration activity/reward. But I can't help but consider what this last month (August) has been like. With Trials and Iron Banner ending, Xur still selling the same old stock, and weekly activities remaining the same as they've been for months it appears Bungie has made a strategic choice. In short remove any incentive/reason for customers to continue playing Destiny 1 - thereby increasing the likelihood they will move to D2, perhaps out of sheer boredom with the prior game if for no other reason. Now, just about three weeks prior to the D2 launch, it's clear this is the path/strategic decision they've made. Another option/path, and certainly one I believe would have generated more enthusiasm, would be to incorporate some of the suggestions made here on these forms. For example, Xur sells Raid Specific loot, a mechanism to complete unfinished bounties, opening the lighthouse just for a visit,..etc. This would have shown a degree of customer appreciation and goodwill toward the community, likely motivated more year one players to consider D2 (as they feel valued), and reduced the notion that Bungie has simply abandoned its base. I would imagine there's many players like me that will reach the end of Destiny 1 with a number of unfinished quests, weapons that were never acquired, and Trials/ IB Bounties still in the queue that are partially complete...etc. As it stands now, the reality for me is these will never be completed. This just leaves me with the feeling that the Destiny1 experience is incomplete with no real opportunity for completion. And this impacts my decision making about D2 adversely. Why should I move to D2 only to expect there'll be aspects of it that I'll likely never complete. After all, that was my Destiny 1 experience. EDIT: I want to be clearer. Above, when I wrote: "...incorporate some of the suggestions made here on these forms. For example, Xur sells Raid Specific loot, a mechanism to complete unfinished bounties, opening the lighthouse just for a visit,..etc." I was merely restating thoughts I had read previously on these forms. The larger point, is Bungie's lack of interest in adding any reason to continue to play. You may defend Bungie's decision to your heart's content, my point is they perhaps missed an opportunity to excite and entice D1 players to purchase D2 by making the final weeks rewarding and fun to play. For me personally, I would have been much more inclined to pre-order if the current experience didn't leave me feeling like they no longer value their current customer. And customers that no longer feel valued tend to leave.

Here is truth whether Destiny players like it or not. It's the truth whether Destiny players admit it or not. Do you know why Activision executives call Destiny Players "subscribers" in their investor calls? "Oh I'm not a subscriber!" some will say. Unless you quit Destiny out right cold Turkey, you are a subscriber. Activision calls them "subscribers" because a large amount of the active player base will buy absolutely any content Bungie puts out. Bungie manipulates this process by adding content paywalls and removing essential content. For example, if you didn't buy the Dark Below you couldn't play House of Wolves. If you didn't buy Dark Below you also had missions and rewards removed which basically left the base game sterile. You guys keep thinking Destiny is a game and it's not. It's a gaming service. You are not paying for "Destiny 2" September 6th, you are paying to continue subscribing to Bungie's gaming service.

      • I get the whole moving forward thing. But it would be nice to be able to get any and all weapons now. Just to see what it's like. Wouldn't do any harm.

      • You can complete everything except trials and banner. I never had any hope of the light house and i looted the banner for everything. Of course. Bungie wants players to buy D2, at least they didnt simply end D1 altogether.

        • D1 was about grind, incoherant and half finished story lines, without any real respect for the time you put into the game. I honestly spent more time, during RoI, in orbit and on LFG than actually play the game. I understand where you are coming from, but I would say make up your own mind on whether you should buy this game. Reviews are going to be 4-6 week after launch, at least any decent in depth ones. I'm not going to say don't buy it at all, I would you rather put the hype and marketing speak, and the shiny pre-order bonus toys that will be pointless 30 mins into the game.

          • They don't care about D1 anymore, they don't care about making players excited to play it, they already got your money

Take some accountability. We've know for over a year now what the approximate release date for D2 was going to be and it was stated multiple times when the last IB and Trials were going to be. If leaving no bounty undone was that important to you, you should've taken the initiative to ensure a satisfactory completion of said activities. You didn't finish that quest. You didn't finish that bounty. You didn't finish enough raids to get that coveted gear. It's your own inability hindering your "completion" experience, not anything Bungie has or hasn't done. It's you that's "adversely affecting your decision to buy D2." The game will still be available to play, sans Iron Banner and Trials. NF will still rotate every every week. Raid Challenges will still rotate every week. You still have 2 1/2 weeks to finish those quests and bounties that are in your inventory. Also, even though they aren't releasing any further updates, there will still be active maintenance throughout its lifetime to keep it up and running.

            • When I saw the name "ZeRo", I immediately thought of that top-level Smash 4 player that literally beats out almost everyone. Then I was like: "Oh yeah this is Destiny, not smashboards; guess I'll just go back to sleep."

              •
opening the lighthouse just for a visit
I don't get why they didn't do this for those who went flawless. If they can put in the extra effort to shut down ToO and IB, they can put in the effort to keep it open.

              • Well written. Fact is I have no idea the resources required to launch a game like D2. As a manager I would use everything I have to launch my sequel; then revisit my original IP with under utilized staff post launch.

              • Destiny has been out for years. It isn't Bungie's fault you came in late. The fact that the old game won't be supported anymore because a new is coming out should be obvious.

                • Destiny was also supposed to be a subscription like service, with players regularly buying DLC to take part in limited time events. The problem was two fold: too many players quit when then hit a wall at level 20 and Destiny 2 was delayed by an entire year. So for Destiny 2, if Bungie really fixes the retention and content problems, the game will relentlessly move from one live event to the next, never looking back.

                • Destiny has always been built around "Buy the next DLC to keep playing" this is not really bad considering the type of game it is and that you dont have to pay a subscription like other MMOs. I suppose Destiny 2 is essentially in the form of Buy the next DLC. Buy the next game to continue your journey.
