It's a tough question to answer when there is so many intangibles to what makes people love it. The way I'm going to look at it, its that it's a game that's better than the sum of its parts.
On the surface it's an fps, with admittedly some of the best fps mechanics on the market. But by anybodies standards, aside from the actual combat, it's an incredibly shallow fps, with every mission and strike playing out essentially the same way, defend against 3 waves of enemies, travel to another part, rinse and repeat, you know the drill.
Graphics are below average now, but it's 3 years old so doesn't count( though D2 is only a very minor improvement). P2P has been an issue since day one, likewise lack of artistic direction. I've always felt that the whole amalgamation of mmorpg fps always felt more like confusion than cohesion, but that's a personal feeling.
The intangibles are what make destiny great. On the sum of its parts, not so much.
