The simple answer is yes - it is a good game!
The more pointed question is how much better it could have been.... One of my favorite commentaries is by BatmanDobbins on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ5BpeHVTWY
for myself, I pretty much agree with him. I have put way too many hours in Destiny, and continue to do so. But they shredded so much intriguing content, that I am a bit saddened.
And with D2, they are abandoning soooooo many potential storylines. They say the Stranger is done... WHY? She apparently has a lot to say, and could have been developed much, much more. My bet is that the community may agree with that.
The awoken.... Sure - it looks like they had their asses handed to them, but there seems to be some wiggle room with the fate of the queen.... consciousness transference maybe... Hey she appeared to have SOME sort of mental abilities....
Too much PVP balancing is another thing, BTW....
I'm sure everyone has their own personal regrets at what they did - or didn't elect to do - with the game and story.
I still play it - but mostly for the social aspect of playing with faithful friends...
D2 abandons pretty much the whole idea Destiny was built on... the Guardians and the light....
I am a bit saddened by the story.

Edited by IronMazo: 8/15/2017 4:52:22 PMBDobbingFtw is hypocritical at best on most of his destiny videos or any game that he picks to sht on, while he did have some points in his early videos about the DLC heavy/ season pass of vanilla Destiny, he just like to rant and make conspiracy theories on why some games arent for his tastes. While Bungo and Activision desserve some flack for the bonehead decisions they made during vanilla Destiny only a fool will be still mourning for what "could've" be the destiny we were "promised" or desserved and dont recognize how the game have changed and evolved during this time.

To each his own opinion... but no call to name people as 'fools' who were (and remain) disappointed at the hack 'n slash Destiny received. As to BdobbinsFTW, I don't typically watch his videos, but the first was pretty insightful on the initial release for Destiny. I started off actually addressing the OP question... and offered editorial commentary since few games garner such high praise and corresponding criticism, qualification seemed admissible. For my tastes, the story is very important, and that is where Destiny falls down. Gameplay is extraordinary, and the mechanics amongst the best I have experienced in my admittedly paltry gaming history. I said it initially, and will again, I am saddened to see D1 pass into D2. I hope D2 gets a better story....

I get it but i think you are setting yourself for dissapointment even before release with that way of thinking. While some plot lines or plot points are being abandoned for now, some are being expanded and focused as a tiny example The Exodus black ship in nessus and Faisafe. Bungo said that they are focusing now more on the meaning of being Guardians, our conection to the light and if we dont have light are we still guardians?, that to me gives the history soo much more focus and potential that "The Darkness", first we have to comprehed ourself, what we are and then they can refine the idea of the Darkness (which they did a fantastic job during the Books of Sorrows without explaining anything). Now it seems that they at least have a clear idea of the story they want to tell instead of grabing and stiching pieces to create a frankestein to hit realease date. Bungo can create good stories look at TTK or ROI.

We'll judge Destiny 2 when it comes out. But in the mean time I did agree with BDobbinsFTW for Destiny 1 but his Destiny 2 rants are trash and made only to get views.
