I'm actually sickened by this. I understand not wanting it in a public space, but for gods sake [i]dont destroy it.[/i]
History, and the lessons it can impart, is sacrosanct. Move the damn thing to a museum. This has shades of ISIS actions in Palmyra.
Its wrong. Its reprehensible and I hope they get done for vandalism.

Robert E Lee himself said there should be no statues commemorating the southern confederacy succession or anyone who took part in it after their loss to the union. Tear them all down and burn them I say. Losers don't deserve participation trophies.

Given that context, make of this situation what you will. Personally, I wont lose any sleep over the monument being destroyed, but the way in which it was done does bug me. I don't like the consequences of this kind of stuff. Mob attitudes/actions like this are probably just going to cause more strife, which is no bueno. Also, people [i]are[/i] being arrested.

Just for the record, NC passed a law a few years ago that prevented local governments from removing statues and monuments. So there isn't really a "traditional legal channel" there in Durham http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article28456504.html

4 RepliesFrom what I understand, this is actually a monument to the child soldiers of the Confederacy. Specifically to them. Watching the footage, all I could think was the destruction of antiquities by Isis. Those who do not respect history, not matter how offensive they find it. No matter what it means. No matter the truth of it; they will be doomed to repeat it. History should NEVER be destroyed or forgotten. No matter how reprehensible we may think it is, it needs to be embraced and understood. If you don't understand where you came from, how you got to this point, then how can you weigh the options of the future going forward? If you destroy history or monuments to history because it gets your foofoos in a bunch, then you're no better than those who are desiccating antiquities because your god is better than their gods.

When you watch a pendulum swing, it slowly loses momentum & comes to rest in a balanced position. What we are seeing is a pendulum that is gaining momentum & getting more extreme with each swing. If we do not stand up & say enough is enough, the end result will be catastrophic. If I was a tinfoil hat wearer, I would say people are poking & prodding for this to happen. Once everyone rises up & starts fighting each other, possibilities open up for consequences that can take away a whole lot of our rights. Acting like children just gets you put in time out & your toys taken away, only in this case, we are adults & our toys are cooler.
