Mtashed: The Truth about SBMM in Destiny 2

Bungie has already stated that SBMM in Quick Play and Competitive is only for the Beta: This can be adjusted easily for launch. We don't need to rage right now, but we can discuss our feelings about it. If you are coming here to argue about it one way or the other, have an articulate discussion. Argue your points, defend your stance. Don't be a degenerate throwing slurs and swears around for no reason. SBMM in most games is a net positive for the "Average Joe". It gives them balanced lobbies to thrive in, fail in, make mistakes in, and improve in. However, the better you get, the worse SBMM can feel. Hyper competitive games 24/7 can feel frustrating, and being unable to play with friends who are weaker really sucks. The better you get, connections also become worse as the system has fewer and fewer local players to match you against. However, flat our removing SBMM can ruin the experience for the majority of players in the game: The average joe. Personally, I think losing to a better player is one of the best ways to improve at a game. BUT, being dominated by a stacked team of 4 for an entire match is a terrible experience. Many people I have talked to suggest having connection based match making in Quickplay, and SBMM in competitive. This might be a solid balance for the game, as the majority of players are average. While there may be top tier players in some of the games, or even stacked teams from time to time, more often than not, the players in the lobbies with be AVERAGE. Will you sometimes get destroyed in Quick play? Yes Will you sometimes dominate in Quick play? YES Having SBMM in Competitive provides a place to grow as a player against people of similar skill, while Quickplay can be a gamble of skill levels many people enjoy in other shooter games. I would love to hear your opinions on this, however I really hope we can be civil in here. • Why should higher lvl players get to relax sometimes, this is the worst argument I have ever heard. As a avarage or below , as I am. My games are sweaty with people of my skill lvl. Then I play good ass people and get stomped. When do I get to relax... Never ... Why should you?

    • I will probably catch some flak for this, but I don't care. It's safe to say that you make money from your streaming and YouTube videos, correct? So, you are, in essence, a professional gamer. You get paid for what you do. The amount doesn't really matter. I'm going to make a comparison that I feel is adequate to what you are proposing. Say we have a professional football player (top 1%). Now, they play their best all of the time. Now, the "average Joe", as you put it, is like a high school football player. They play their best, but it just doesn't cut it. Is it fair for a professional player to play against a high school player?

I know this is only bait to get views for your faltering youtube channel, so you will never check this thread again, but anyway: You're a professional. You complaining about strong opponents and wanting less "sweaty" games is like a professional boxer saying that it should be ok to roughen up some regular ppl in a club/bar from time to time. All his pro fights are so competitive...

        • With all due respect, you complained about matches not being competitive enough all of Destiny 1. So when Destiny 2 gives you what you wanted, at the cost of what made Destiny great, you complain that it's too sweaty. No offense but make up your mind, and quit being hypocritical.

Ah yes bmtashed, haven't seen you around here lately. In typical fashion you show up drop a link to your latest shitpost of a vid and head out hoping the views will come in for you. You sit there quietly in your room at your moms house wondering how the videos you make aren't getting you the amount of subs and views that Willis gaming, datto, king goth, etc. You say to yourself "yea I know I don't post anything useful but I post vids with me talking over them!!! Shouldn't that be enough??!! I really need to make this work cause I really don't want to have to get a real job..." Stop posting.

              • What do you mean with "the truth about matchmaking"? When I watched your video, I heard an opinion. Somehow you feel that opinion is "the truth"? I do disagree with your opinion. SBMM makes it more equal. I might make 'dumb' moves as I'm an average Joe, yet I try my best. PvP games are hard to me too and I rarely get streaks. Making a non-SBMM playlist only spreads out the playerbase, making the SBMM list less reliable. Which means bottom tier players might start facing more difficult opponents. When I want to play more casual, I'll do PvE. You should try it.
Why wouldn't you want connection based MM in the "competitive" mode? Quickplay, to me sounds like a place for average players who need SBMM. Trials wasn't a place for every average player - it was a "competitive" playlist without SBMM. I don't remember streamers begging for SBMM in Trials.

                  • I think you guys down in the comments should be grateful we even have SBMM. Sure, the top players have a harder time finding matches (like in every other game with this system), but us average players get matched with the same skill of players, which is good. Back then, we had to go through servers and watch the good players in action to get better. I would still watch great players today to get better, but that's just me.

                  • We should have tiers of ranks, i.e. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. If you're a Bronze player, then you get matched with Bronze and Silver only. If you're Platinum, only Gold or Platinum. Silver tier players get ranked with Bronze, Silver and Gold. Gold Players get matched with Silver, Gold and Platinum players. This will keep new players from getting stomped and will allow the best players to go up against good players and not have to go too sweaty all the time. For unranked, then you can play with anyone but the rewards shouldn't be as good. They should be good, but maybe competitive weapons and armor have an additional mod slot or something and trials (if they have trials) weapons and armor will have two additional mod slots. This way, you still get something out of playing competitive rather than unranked playlists. And for goodness sake, let's have your rank diminish over long periods of inactivity so when you come back to the game after 6 months, you're not playing against PvP gods while you're trying to get back into the groove of things. This should fix most PvP MM issues.

Hey I am one "Below Average Joe". In the first year of Destiny when ever I went into the Crucible I got demolished and after 3 games I would leave and not come back for a couple of months. Once SBMM came in when we got SRL I played and won a few games. Since then I played in the Crucible on a consistent basis. Over that time my monthly KD rose from .6 to just over 1.0 which makes me want to play more. I know the top players feel the best way to get better is to play against better opponents but for me that is not the case. The way to get better is to first of all play the game. I need more than 10-15 seconds a life to figure out positioning and angles. I need more engagements that I can retreat from instead of getting killed before I can even think about disengaging. All of those things top players do because of their ingrained skill I need to practice first with those of my skill level. For me SBMM is critical for me to want to play and I appreciate those in the top tier understanding and supporting it for those like me. Thanks for the post Mtashed

                    • Bottom line, if you're at least a decent player in Destiny pvp and you've ever gone up against a full team of straight bad players or players who don't care about winning...you know at the bottom of your heart that there has to be sbmm. I have seen clash lobbies where I could go 1v6 with the enemy and maybe give them a run for their money. Of course I wouldn't win.. But if I can do that, some one like Hovey can do it far easier. And that's no fun at all for the opposing team. The reason sbmm exists in Destiny is because of longevity. Look at COD. It doesn't have sbmm because they pump another title of cod out every year or so. They don't have to keep players engaged in a single game because there's always one on the horizon. Destiny has the same stuff for a long time so to keep it enjoyable for everyone there must be a filter for the casuals, a filter for casuals who are good, and a filter for the elite. This unfortunately results in the top tier always playing against the top tier. But you know what? If they put all that effort into being that good at the game...that's what they get. What else can you do?

I understand your issue and those in the top 5-10% in the world have. They have to play sweats all the time. I'm sure the bottom 5-10% feel the same way no matter what system is in place. The question is do you go with a system that appeases the minority (10% -20%) of your player base or do you go with a system that is geared towards the majority (80-90%)? I doubt they're going to cater to the minority. That's not a sustainable business model. If they do as you suggest then I guarantee what's going to happen is that the top tiered players are going to mostly play in those "easier" lobbies. Then average players are going to stop playing Crucible altogether because getting shit on is not fun. If it happens once in a while fine but 7 out of 10? No way anyone wants any part of that. If average players stop playing then your're back to sweats again. So I would suggest having another account that you can delete every so often to keep your Elo low and use it to have fun with your lowered skilled friends. I'm sure a lot of top players do this already. Edit: You might be able to make an SBMM lobby and a Connection Based lobby (CBMM). I'd be willing to bet most people would choose the SBMM lobby. So you'd be back to sweats again. There's just no compelling way to convince most people that being killed by superior players is the way to have fun.

Otherwise, what's the point in playing a game that I love? When I watch a streamer, I don't want to see them pubstomp 1.0 kd players, I want to see the elite, being elite... I also understand that you wanna play with your average/low k.d friends, but hey, you've wipe a lobby of 1.0 kd's on your own... so would your fire team have fun, or just watch you stomp on kill cam? I ain't got the answer!

Makes perfect sense to me. My only comment is, the more that casual players get stomped by high level players, the quicker they leave; the quicker it becomes a game of sweaty try hards stomping around with few players playing. That's bad for the game. The high level KD players should mainly be separated out to play against players of their skill. If that's bad for streamer business, well.. sorry, but it's better for the average players and the game overall. They should have most of the PVP game modes have SBMM, with a small portion totally random. If the ultra pros only want to keep KD high and stomp "average" players, well that's where they can. Otherwise, they should play at their skill level . This isn't a game built for pros, it's built for the masses to have fun.

                            • If SBMM worked, games wouldn't be lopsided They are still as lopsided as ever and teams get broken up after every game. So whoever argues that SBMM makes for more fair and balanced games is full of shit.

                            • The thing about SBMM that sweaty tryhards forget is how many of your games will get abandoned. It goes like this. Match with players worse than you. Start stomping. Other players start abandoning. You run around the whole map not finding anyone. New players join. Stomping continues. Players abandon. Rinse and repeat until you're bored.
