Destiny 2 preorder numbers vs Destiny 1 750,000 gap. A loss of around 67 million in preorders.

  • Yeah, just got off with Xbox support, canceled my pre-order of Destiny 2. Honestly, I hope D2 fails, it'll show Activision that they need to cut out their horrible and shady business practices for all of their products.

Those charts show pre-ordering on 4 platforms for Destiny and 2 platforms for Destiny 2. Just that alone makes the data irrelevant when comparing. And what about the PC release of Destiny 2? I'm sure that will bump up the numbers but even then it'll be 3 platforms vs 4.

            • Destiny 1 was Bungie's first game into their new IP away from Halo. All of those pre-orders were due to curiosity and hype. Outside of people leaving due to not being interested in the game, a lot of the community has left over the years due to Bungie itself. Alienating whatever was left of their old community, pissing off their new community time after time, and ultimately becoming a shallow shell of their former self was what caused the biggest rift with even the most loyal fans. Bungie will still make a decent profit and have thousands of people kissing their ass, but it won't ever reach the levels that it used to. I honestly don't think anything will change that.

The Coldheart is just Activision's desperate attempt to please investors with something.

They kept messing up with their game and with the players. Actually I'm a bit surprised that the difference isn't bigger. Edit. No pre order from me. I played the beta in the launch....that was it. Going to wait for some players that I trust to give me some feedback after the Game is out. Watch few videos, check the forums....and only then I may or not buy it. (Maybe it will be even cheaper)

                • Should have been busy making content all those years, not balancing the game to death. What a waste of opportunities. The most sad thing is they still, STILL insist on the defective, perverted course they took after Y1. Trickling content and milking the rest of the player base. Shity bastards.

                  • Less pre-orders not because D2 is looking worse than D1, but that people were "fooled" into buying D1 before they knew what it was. Now people are more aware that it won't have "everything" like D1 sounded like it would. To be expected.

                    • Either everyone is holding out for the PC version, or a lot of people got smart and aren't pre-ordering based upon D1 and how that all went.

                          • There are several posts saying the number of pre orders doesn't matter and/or the number of people who actually purchase the game doesn't matter. When in reality, those numbers are very much relative to your gaming experience. Not only do the sales directly affect matchmaking pools, but it also affects future content. It affects the contract with Activision. It affects the franchise as a whole. You can't support a game that isn't being played. And you can't play a game if it isn't being supported. Especially considering it's a persistent online-only world. There is actually an inherent, and undeniable correlation between the sales of D2 and the survivability of Bungie/Destiny in the long term. Will Destiny sell well.... undoubtedly. Will it sell as much as D1.... highly unlikely. Given the feedback and direction of D2, I also am skeptical many people will stick around for the lifespan of this installment. We've already been sold a 3 year beta. I doubt many people want to keep paying full AAA prices for multi year betas. People probably have better things to do with their time and money.

                          • By the way. After the beta? They just announced a whole buttload of more free shit you'll be getting for preordering. Translation... "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT I WONDER IF MACDONALDS IS HIRING! PLEASE GODS LET SOMEONE BUY THIS -blam!-ING GAME OR OUR CAREERS ARE OVER AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

                          • That's easy to explain: D1 had no Bnet forums full of self-entitled cry babies that are clueless about gaming in general bashing it for months prior to release. D2 does. D2 is going to be great. All of the haters will try other games and come back to Destiny (and be behind because they start late). That's how I see it. No one said it was broke... I believe the intent is "improvement". Discuss.

Well, the simple fact is that Destiny 1 had made around a decade or so worth of really big promises. Promises they failed entirely to keep. This was supposed to be the next big thing in gaming... Instead it was just a game. A decent game. Fun to play but otherwise devoid and empty of content. An utter fraud of what was promised. Destiny 1 had a lot of preorders because people were expecting to get the game they were promised... And those people were massively disappointed. The number of people who were day 1 players who stuck with them to the bitter end are not in any way the majority... There are a lot of people who are not only not rooting for destiny 2 to succeed... There are a lot of pissed off players who are actively rooting for Destiny 2 to be such a complete failure that the company not only loses money on the production but ends up powering down the servers from lack of anyone using them. Bungie HAD to know people were actively rooting for them to fail. That they didn't put extra effort into making damn sure that pve content, the thing that people will actually feel drawn to buy the game for... Needed to be spot on perfect, just to hold onto players they already had... It boggles the mind they put out a beta that made the game look this bad... Everything from weapons, to skills, to charge times, to player movement speed, and even core skill physics like area of effect and frankly in some cases skills need to be reimagined... How did they put out this as a beta, knowing people were looking for an excuse to walk away with middle finger held high...
