How's Elite Dangerous compared to No Man's Sky?

NMS is the only open world space game I ever played. I was bored quick. I'd like to hear some opinions of people who played both.

  • Elite is not an exploration game, Elite is a star fighter pilot's dream

Elite is a real game. NMS is -blam!-ing bullshit. Note that Elite is still a niche game. If you don't like it you'll find it boring. If you do like it then Elite is the best option for you.

    • They are both mind numbingly boring. If you like just cruising around looking at pretty sights it's cool. But if you are looking for fun just pass. I played it in VR with a sweet hotas setup and still couldn't enjoy it. I really really really want to love it, but it's just soooo boring!

    • Formula I race car compared to a street-legal Honda. They are two different games. Elite Dangerous is a space-sim meets MMO. Steep learning curve. No fixed campaign. The game is you figuring out what you want to do with the tools the game provides you, and your interactions with other players. No Man's Sky....was first and foremost a survival game......with bits and pieces of RPG and mystery game thrown in. Hello Games spent to much time building a (literally) Universe-sized sandbox....and not enough time filling it with interesting things to do. But if you'e someone who craves a lot of non-stop action? Avoid both games. Even in Elite Dangerous you're going spend a LOT of time looking at star fields, and hauling virtual cargo from one location to another. Elite is a very good game, but one that I'm thinking is probably not to your taste if you bored "quickly" playing NMS. I got about 30 to 40 hours out of NMS before I finally started to get frustrated with it.

Elite Dangerous has a lot more to it. I played the first game as a child, and it stuck with me forever. I have been waiting for this to land on PS4, and I have to say, there is a lot to this game, bit it is one of those self motivating games, you have to go looking it does not come to you. One thing that I have to say though, is that I am not seeing the steep learning curve, that others have talked about. It only took me an hour or so to familiarise myself with the control scheme, and I have not had any issues. FD have done a great job of mapping the core controls into this game.

      • If you're going to get in ED, do it now. 2.4 is going to change the galaxy. What platform?

        • Elite Dangerous is the kind of game that requires a lot of dedication just to get into. The flight controls are unforgiving, guidance is non-existent, and it's the kind of game you have to make your own fun in. If that's your thing Elite Dangerous is amazing, if it's not then I'd say avoid it.

        • Elite is more of a space sim, while No Man's Sky is arcadey exploration. Elite has more depth and stuff to do, but it all comes down to what kind of game you want to play.

          • Well I've never played NMS but I've got a metric tonne of time in Elite. It doesnt hold your hand at all, mistakes and over-confidence early on are punished brutally. The grind can also be very very real. Also, you arent the all-conquering hero, you're another brick in the wall. However its stunningly beautiful, has an intriguing slow-burn background narrative and once you finally clamber over the learning cliff, its very rewarding. Bugs? Yeah they happen, but FDEV normally squash them fairly fast, and should you lose credits unfairly to a bug, submitting a ticket usually sees you re-imbursed within 24 hours. Also, theres a steady stream of new content and features. At the moment, an Alien race is making its appearance, and future plans involve planets with atmospheres being landable (currently only barren moons etc are landable) and theres been an increase in talk about walking around ships and stations...
