There is a lot more getting in the way then just the resources used specifically for the online component. The complexity of the underlying engine in general consumes a lot of available resources on it's own. Either a lot of things need to get scaled down consiserably, or a better underlying engine put into place. Such things will take a considerably long time to do and with the Activision deal's mandates for new content releases, the work on content updates would likely be perpetually getting in the way. Who knows, they may already be working towards that goal. We may see considerably more consistent 30fps with D2, an indicator of such improvements taking place. If so, and they continue to move forward we may see D2 eventually evolve into the 60 FPS field on the console's one day, or maybe with D3? We are moving to a dramatically more server dependent format in D2. Gameplay will be hosted exclusively by servers--no more consoles hosting stuff for the instances. This is moving extremely close to what people consider "dedicated servers". So we could see some marked improvements, depending on how well the matching goes with the expanded datacenter and cloud service infrastructure changes. Just gonna have to wait to see how much better/worse frame rates actually feel in D2. Hopefully it is noticeably and progressively improved going forward.
