At a NATO summit in Brussels with top EU leaders, president Trump scolded Germany, and vowed to put an end to the country’s hefty car exports to the U.S., multiple German and now English-language news outlets report.
The president allegedly told the leaders:
The Germans are bad, very bad... Look at the millions of cars they sell in the US. We will stop this.
Though this quote has been translated from German, multiple German reporters from the outlet Der Spiegel have reported the quote translated into English, including Veit Medick:
The Sueddeutsche Zeitung also reported in German a similar “bad, very bad” quote, and ZDF also said that Trump was displeased with Germany’s heavy automotive trade surplus to the U.S. The same has been quoted by Slate and Quartz, among others in the U.S. too.
These comments are in keeping with some of the other rhetoric Trump has been spewing about foreign carmakers. On the campaign trail he regularly targeted companies like Toyota, threatening them into making cars in the U.S.—which many of them already do. In this case BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen all have substantial manufacturing bases in the U.S.; BMW alone makes all of its SUVs in South Carolina.
Earlier this year, he criticized German automakers BMW, Daimler and VW for not building enough American-market automobiles stateside, with Reuters quoting the president as saying:
If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax.
According to MIT’s Observatory of Economic Complexity, a visualization tool for international trade data, Germany has a $252 billion positive trade balance, with the majority of goods being cars, which make up 12 percent of all exports. The top destination for German export goods, the OEC shows, is the U.S., representing 9.9 percent of all export value, or $122 billion.
It’s worth noting that Donald Trump is clearly a fan of German cars, as the only video we’ve seen of him actually driving shows him behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce, which is built by German company BMW.

God he really can be dumb at times just not as much as the left likes to attribute. The only trade deal that was bad was the TPP with China. The other deals are fine or at least not so bad that society is used to paying for it. Renegotiating is probably going to -blam!- us over further than if things remained the same.
-
I can just see the news headlines, "Trump doesn't want you to drive!" "See the cars Trump doesn't want you to drive!" First comment, "Wow America is the laughing stock of the world. The pride Americans take in their country is sad. My country is better."
-
I think more people should buy American cars, they have improved greatly but don't stop foreign car imports. That's really dumb
-
They're just like the mexicans, they're stealing our jobs!
-
Why can't we go back to the 1940's?
-
Trump asked merkel 11 times if he could do a direct trade deal with Germany Every time the answer was the same No you can only deal with the EU. Which puts Great Britain to the bottom of the cue.
-
When they say make your bed and lay in it. Why do we all have to?
-
When are we going to get tired of winning???
-
Subaru wrx, I want one so bad.
-
Dur takin' er jeeeerbs!
-
Well, I don't intend on buying imports anyways, so this doesn't really affect me. Hell, even if I could magically have as many cars as I wanted, there wouldn't be a single European or Asian car in the bunch. My reasons are equal parts patriotism and the fact that I can't stand the sound of those high strung engines. You just can't beat the sound of american muscle!
-
Based on your B.net name, I believe this is biased and shall be disregarded.
-
You know that this only means that german cars will be pretty much forced to be built in america? That all. That doesnt block them from entering, just creates jobs and makes already upmarket cars, slightly more upmarket.

Edited by Satanic Mechanic: 5/26/2017 6:24:29 PMHa there are 3 German car plants (all in the south) that has close to 100 k workers and puts BILLIONS of dollars into the local economy...
-
If German cars are shit, what does that make American cars? Because American cars certainly aren't better... Plus, isn't there a huge BMW factory in North or South Carolina?
-
my grandpa has been a used car dealer for over 20 years and from his knowledge I can confidently say German cars are shit but to stop the import of them? cmon trump just play golf for a few more years and let the next (wo)man try
