Destiny 2 Thoughts, Hopes, & Expectations

I would like to start by saying that I intend on playing Destiny 2. I love Destiny, I've made some great friends in it, and I look forward to continuing my adventures in its strange beautiful worlds. I also understand why what we've seen from Destiny 2's reveal looked like essentially more of the same; the first Destiny had a lot of issues, and Bungie is making Destiny 2 as a clean slate to do everything correctly this time. I get it, and I'm alright with this. That said, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed by how tame everything looks so far, and I understand why a lot of people weren't blown away by the reveal (yes, I know the reveal only likely scratched the surface). For me, I think the slight bit of disappointment comes from expectations I've built up from the great lore in the Grimoire. Wish-granting dragons (Ahamkara), giant worm gods (Yuul, Xol, Ur, Eir, Akka), Vex gates connecting points across space and time (meaning we don't even have to be in the Solar System or in the present). The lore opens a window to so much crazy amazing things that surpass what gameplay has actually presented to us so far, so when I imagined Destiny 2, I imagined fighting dragons and worm gods. I don't just want to read about these amazing things, I want to experience them. Seriously, imagine an exotic quest where you have to travel through time to hunt a Ahamkara to use its bones to craft a sword. Another aspect of the disappointment is the desire for novelty and change. We've seen a few (maybe 2) new Cabal units, but I want new types of really freaky Hive abominations created through dark magic, new types of Vex models built in strange new forms (didn't notice any in the Inverted Spire strike), etc. I would even like to see entirely new enemy species after we wipe out an existing one (though for the Fallen, I'd rather unite them under House Judgement and make them allies), but I don't think something like that could happen until Destiny 3. I'm hoping Destiny 2 will have much more wild unexpected surprises. I can be okay with just the same stuff being done better like the reveal suggests we'll get, but I hope for something more than that.

  • My biggest hope is that they nail the single player experience. I love raiding, it's by far my favorite thing to do in the game. However I also enjoy exploring the game world, I've scoured just about every nook and cranny for the fun of it. I am cautiously optimistic about the adventures and lost sectors. Will they all be a one and done type of thing, will there be MMO-like dailies/weeklies that push me back into the same areas again, will they be worth doing during the endgame? I'm sad that the new locations won't be as big as I'd hoped, but maybe they will be able to pack enough into them to keep me going back.
