this is all I am seeing all over the forums, all over the internet and I feel like i'm in the same place aswell. anybody else? I can't help but feel like destiny will fail rapidly without them especially competitively. (in my own opinion) I also assume this is the real reason behind the switch to 4v4 modes and I also feel like both peer to peer and 4v4 modes may just ruin crucible which is to me what played a massive part in keeping the game alive. to me dedicated servers were the only thing ever missing from destiny crucible and it looks like with destiny 2 they did everything right with the PVE and I assume they gave us everything we wanted on the PVE side of things but gave us everything we didn't ask for in PVP. I care about the success of Destiny. ''Why Dedicated Servers Are Better than P2P If you’re a gamer, most likely, you’re one of the millions who take this hobby extremely seriously. Today’s gamers love their favorite pastime to the point that many have actually made careers out of them. This may not be to the extent you’ve taken it—or even hope to—but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to play your best game every time, especially when it’s against others. This brings up the debate between using a dedicated server for this purpose and relying on a P2P (peer-to-peer) connection. The long and the short of it is that any developer that really wants the most from the online playing experience they provide needs to go with a dedicated server. Peer to Peer Servers P2P connections just refer to the kind you already have with your console, whether it’s a PlayStation, Xbox or PC. These systems can all connect to the Internet and, thus, to one another. It’s how most people enjoy online gaming. Now, even if everyone playing the same game lacks a dedicated server, they’re still connecting to one. Just like with a website, a dedicated server is needed to keep the game up and running. P2P connections, therefore, actually involve a dedicated server. Dedicated Servers However, some games are so massive, (e.g. MMOs), that special servers are needed in order to support the players. Your typical home Internet setup just doesn’t have upload speeds that are high enough to cope with any more than a few players. A dedicated server, though, has an Internet connection with much higher speeds which is why it can be called upon to support hundreds and hundreds of players at a time. The actual developer behind games of this size needs a server bank, which is just a room with many dedicated servers. Just like with traditional banks, these server banks are usually located all over the world in multiple countries to provide redundancy in the face of the unexpected. Obviously, the cost associated not just with running these servers, but also maintaining and housing them, is substantial. However, the stability is unrivaled. They create a connection between players that gives everyone an almost identical experience with their game. Conclusion The more complicated a game, the more necessary it is that a dedicated server be used to host it. At the rate things are going, though, just about every game is going to be this complicated in the very near future.'' source: https://www.serverpronto.com/spu/2015/11/why-dedicated-servers-are-better-than-p2p/ ''
Abstract- Recently, P2P (peer-to-peer) online game sys- tems have attracted a great deal of public attention. They work without central servers, thus, the mainte- nance and organization costs have been drastically re- duced. However, in P2P systems, it is difficult for game creators to prevent cheats by malicious players, due to the lack of trusted servers
.'' source: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/221157453_How_to_Protect_Peer-to-Peer_Online_Games_from_Cheats tickrate: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/217883646 peer to peer and cheating examples : Destiny: https://www.polygon.com/2016/10/26/13394068/destiny-trials-of-osiris-ruined-cheaters-ddos-spam For honor: http://www.gamerevolution.com/features/peer-to-peer-ddos-attacks-threaten-for-honor-future-success-p2p Conclusion: alot of greatly designed and well made games fail just because of peer to peer and many examples can be found, just go and look for yourselfs. Disclaimer: I'm not here to hate on Bungie or Destiny or any of it's development team, I love Destiny as a whole , PVE and PVP and only want to see it reach it's full potential and success. The community of Destiny to me was the only community on a game I ever really cared for and the only one I ever care to see live a long and prosperous future. the servers, crucible balance and lack of content will only ever be the real reasons it will ever be held back in reaching its full potential and success. In my opinion.

    • The problem is viewing destiny as a competitive game. It's not. Never has been. The crucible has never been built around the concept of being fair or rewarding for displays of skill.

      • The only people that really complain about dedicated servers are the Crucible heavy players. I like everything else about the game and have enjoyed it thus far... dedicated servers or not.

      • No option for "I already pre-ordered and not only do I not care about what type of server is used, I'm already up to HERE with the whole issue (or non-issue, as far as I'm concerned) and I wish y'all would just get the hell over it already, no amount of whinging is going to change this decision, you're going to buy D2 no matter what server it's on and no matter what fps it runs at, you know it, I know it, and we all know it". So, I didn't vote as I don't fit any of your categories. Smh.

          • I think you make a good argument. No question dedicated servers will yield a more reliable connection between players. However, as it's mentioned in one of the blog posts you referenced, "the cost associated not just with running these servers, but also maintaining and housing them, is substantial." That's a big reason right there why Bungie has not pulled the trigger on dedicated servers. I work for a software company with offices around the globe as a systems analyst and have insight into data warehouse and cloud services, such as Azure and AWS. And those services are NOT CHEAP. Good lord, the money this company pays to host services in Azure is ridiculous. Now imagine Bungie paying for multiple datawarehouse locations for redundancy and better connection and paying for maintenance for all those locations. That's a good chunk of change. Change that could be spent in other facets of the game.

          • If Bungie see your poll and thinks this is representative you are giving them something to think about. 29% of possible sales leaving the game is a lot of money.

          • There won't be dedicated servers per mr smith. Sounded like to me they didn't even consider it. I too assume the 4v4 switch was to accommodate for that, down side is it's easier for the fireteam pub stompers to have a seasoned team( no surprise there) I'll preorder right before the cut off date more then likely( should have been an option) I'm keeping hope alive for D2 to live up to hype, of course it won't, kidding yourself thinking it will. I don't mind an extra 20 for a DLC, but not a penny more; none imo have been worth more then that. Just a bunch of reskinned crap. I personally wasn't impressed with much of the reveal. Like the new clan stuff, gameplay looked like COD, all the damage seen from streamers looks like they prenerfed everything so the snowflakes wouldn't come out in droves( but we know they will....their snowflakes) I'll like the somewhat matchmaking in raids, trials( 4v4 as well) and nightfall. Only done couple raids( the people's etiquette in the chat is repulsive) ,trials I tried in the beginning( was like the national guards going up against the seal team 6(or 3 in trials case), can solo any nightfall( but within time limit and score as is now, too much time sink)

          • Where is the "I'm not pre-ordering because its stupid to pay for a game you haven't played yet and can't play for months" the more people pre-order the worse games will get, because they will have your money and it will be to late to get a refund. Don't be stupid wait until the game comes out or at least you have played the beta. Remember D1, all the lies? Don't be stupid, Activi$ion counts on stupid people to make them rich quick.

I've already pre-ordered and will play the PVE content because I like it. However, dedicated servers would give me cause to play pvp. With p2p, I may venture in but it won't be often or because I really want too. If it was a thing I'd probably fork out a small monthly fee for dedicated servers.

Look at the percentages for "I don't care about dedicated servers"... goes to show you how f'n stupid destiny players are... wow! Goes to show you that that bell curve graphic outlying that 3% of the population has an IQ over 110 is not to far from the truth. JHC
I personally am enjoying how this post is drawing out and attracting the lower end of the IQ distribution curve like a bug zapper. It's helping me to put together my "muted" list for being "stupid". LMFAO
There is a small minority that thinks the majority gives a -blam!- about servers. It's not a deal breaker for the majority. It's not happening, so either don't play, or be an adult and deal with it. That simple. Half the people I see asking for dedicated servers don't even seem to know what they are because they talk about them the same way Trump talks about foreign politics, or the way a child talks about a book they never read (but are trying to convince us that they did) lol. Let this shit go people. It won't change, and It's really not the end of the world.

                  • Im not preordering.. but not because of 4v4, no dedicated servers or anything like that. After preordered D1 and its so called dlcs, Im not trusting Bungie enough for a preorder. Im even thinking about not getting the game on launchday and just wait... for the game to show if its actually worth it.

                    • My question, the people who say they're not getting it w/o dedicated servers(and by those people l mean the salty ones-you know they types),will you also delete the app or not visit the Destiny forums? Just curious. I'm fascinated by the sheer number of people who hate this game, hate Bungie for not doing what they, the very important gamers, want them to do but are on this forum on a daily basis shaking out that salt. I figure there is some kind of mental imbalance. 🤷‍♂️ either way it's kinda sad.

No dedicated servers, *I'll beg my parents to pre order me this game hopefully*
fixed for ya kid
Where's the I don't care about pre ordering and dont give a shit in general if the servers are shit then I have the option to play another game. The only people here who care so much are the ones living next to ghettos and piss poor cities with people who can't afford good internet or kids whose parents can't afford it, most of the community here is underage and obviously doesn't buy their own games and less so good Internet so I take whatever this forum says with a grain of salt . I rarely ever had an issue before and so thats how it goes. It be nice to have dedicated servers but I'm not one to put so much effort and love and affection to a video game like its life. There's always a better shooter if u wanna leave.
let the salt rain
The babies who are saying they won't buy it or they're canceling are drama queens. Anyone on this forum still is a big fan of the game. Bet both testicles they will be playing 9/8.

                        • Here's the thing that sucks about this situation. There's too many casual people that play Destiny. These people couldn't give less of a shit it this game had the worst matchmaking in the industry. They're still going to play it and defend it to the fullest. With that being said, if there's not enough concern for them by the community as a whole, they're not going to waste their time. They got away with it for several years with Destiny, I figured they weren't coming in the sequel. Not to mention pretty much anything that's going to cost bungie extra money is going out the window. I'm pretty much bailing out on this franchise's PvP for good after seeing how the sequel is gonna play out. 4v4 only playlists was the icing on the cake.
