For Bungie designers from a casual player

Hey designers, I just would like to share my positive thoughts on some of the new design decisions taken by the Bungie team for Destiny 2. After watching the live stream, I was amazed by the metrics shared on stage with the percentage of players who did not experienced the whole game content. Dude, 50% its a lot... and there I was thinking that I am the only one missing the best part of the party. Good news is that from September 8 that will be something in the past, at least for Destiny 2. Great design decision on the new matchmaking mechanics! If you still have time, hear me out for a bit. I personally believe that games in general do have a problem with casual players. Those with limited time to spare but with great love for the medium and the experiences it provides do suffer big time. Think about this, if it is already difficult for those who have the time to create micro-communities to experience the true Destiny game, imagine for those casual space cowboys drifting in orbit. Its a terrible game experience and I am glad that Bungie is addressing it. I myself have only played two raids since I bought the game on launch day. Frustrating. Today, too many game designers only focus on the heavy player, building their game mechanics around them and only them. I believe this a very poor user experience decision and a miss opportunity. You guys have the metrics to prove. The new matchmaking mechanic is a great starting point but please do not stop there. There are so many other possibilities to bring a joyful experience to all kind of players. On your next brainstorm please think about how to bridge the gap between them. Here's two ideas: - How can the experience change when a player has been away for a while? Do they receive an experience boost? Do they gain a higher chance of getting better loot? Can they share this benefits with more active players? Something like this can bring true in-game value to the casual player. It can provide a stimulus to have the active player seeking the company of a casual player. - Does the game content address the time away? I imagine a piece of dialogue or a cutscene where Cayde 6 throws a joke at the player regarding his whereabouts. There are so many possibilities around this. It can be something really surprising and delightful to the player. Talk to your writers. Anyway, thank you for hearing me out. I am looking forward to the next instalment and meanwhile I will be drifting in orbit. Take it easy, D

  • I enjoy this game alot, and have already ordered D2, but I really hate it when a company misrepresents what it's community has been going through. The claim that 50% of people have been unable to play raids (meaning 50% have) is complete garbage. The achievement for raider (complete any raid) tops out at <20% of all players. Even worse for the most recent expansion at a measly 5.9% of ALL players have completed wrath of the machine. To make a claim that only 50% have missed out isn't just fudging the numbers, it's an outright lie. @bungie
