Arenanet realized over 10 years ago that certain skills can't work the same way in PvP as they do in PvE. They simply created two different versions of the most powerful skills that could be balanced independently.
I strongly suggest a similar approach to weapon/perk balancing in D2. If trials prevails in the same (elimination) manner it further needs specific elimination balancing. A game mode that encourages the cheapest 1hk tactics will always negatively affect overall game balancing where deaths are nowhere as punishing.

Not really. It's just an observation. A mode that gives you one life and severely punishes you for losing a first to five elimination match naturally encourages the cheapest, safest tactics. I honestly don't see any fault in my reasoning.
