A total removal of a feature would be unfortunate, especially for the players that only log on to play that part of Destiny (I'm sure you have measurements of that). However, changes can and, in my opinion, *should* be made in an effort to make the gametype more approachable, more welcoming, and less aggressive. I made my Lighthouse trip back in the early days of Trials, I believe week two, and never really tried again because of the toxic, angry feeling environment it encourages. DDoSing and cheating aside, even legitimate, good players are more than willing to send super inappropriate hate mail, try to exploit the system with various glitches, and overall be a pain in the butt instead of just playing the game.
Look at LFG posts, and count how many times there are phrases like "don't waste my time", "will kick if...", or other borderline rude almost-threats. Read how frustrated people get on the here and reddit. The vast majority of the community doesn't seem to enjoy Trials at all- which is sad, considering Destiny took so many steps to encourage PvP play even in PvE-only players. Trials is, by far, not a Raid-equivalent, because even meek players are willing to try a Raid. Even players who, under normal circumstances, cant communicate (due to lack of a mic or because of a disability) are willing to *try* raiding. Trials just feels discouraging to play, overall.
