My Router is 1 Floor beneath me...Does wireless affect my gameplay?

UPDATE: I have Spectrum 100mbps internet package. Whatever that means lol It was best they offered in my area. Also I have a CAT6 cable otw and I will be going wired. My gf laptop is running 36 download and 9 upload and my ps4 is currently running 14 download and 6 upload wireless upstairs. I will post results once I get wired and see if it makes a difference. In my time in Destiny ive only seen myself a red bar maybe 3-5 times. But I dont know anything about how all this works. For all I know I could be lagging without knowing and as a green bar. If my router is downstairs and only 1 laptop is using internet while im playing destiny, does my gameplay suffer? I have TWC or now known as Spectrum with a new router. It says on ps4 my connection speed (download) is 13.1 mbps and (upload) is 5.9mbps. My signal strength says 100%. Will connecting directly to router make a difference for me? Some pvp matches feel off as far as timing goes. Sometimes ill start shooting someone than they will down me so quickly as if im a few frames behind or something. Little things I notice occasionally. I honestly have no clue so if anyone can give me some advice on if my setup is a problem or if I should move my ps4 into my living room to plug in through a wire. My GF likes to watch her shows down their at night and I like playing Destiny at night upstairs so its not an ideal move for us but if it makes a difference then I might have to trade places with her...although doubtful lol. Thanks.

  • They make Ethernet cables up to 50 ft long maybe even longer .Get one and run that shit through your crib..Wired is ALWAYS more efficient than Wi-Fi, that's networking 101..

    • Don't play on wifi. That's the rule. I don't care what your broadband speed is, how close to your router you are or what the signal strength is. Your connection will not be as good as a wired connection and there is no excuse not to have one If your router is not close to your console you can get network extenders. Plug one into a socket near your router (and connect it to your router via a cable) and then plug the second one in to a socket near your console (and connect it to your console via a cable) It's almost as good as a direct wired connection between router and console and a lot better than wifi

    • There is a big difference between wired and wireless gameplay. However in the terms of just wireless, your gameplay shouldn't be affected as if your right next to it. If you want the best possible go wired, however a wireless connection is not horrible. I used to play on a 3 mb download connection speed wireless, I only had a red bar or lagged when my brother streamed his HD 4k porn or whatever the hell he did. Other than that it didn't affect gameplay or the gameplay for others.

      • If you don't want to move stuff you can look into powerline networking (I've used NetGear's PowerLine AV500 for years but they have much faster stuff now) It's networking using the electrical wiring in your house. Plug in one (directly into an outlet) near and connected to the router, and the other one by the PS4 and run another short network cable from it to the console. Bam, wired connection without having to move anything (depending on house layout).

        • There is inherently a drop in quality over wireless compared to wired connections in general, but the more data signals you're running to your router (the laptop) or simply other wireless signals in the surrounding area (wifi-connected smart TV, microwave, cell phones, etc.), the more that will affect your connection. The more wifi networks in your neighborhood or building, the more it affects your signal. Secondly, your console can't match the same speeds as your router/modem regardless of whether it's wired or wireless. I have 200 down/40 up and even wired less than 5 ft away my console network shows way less than that. So it's more about the quality of your connection's signal over wifi and who you're connecting to, since this is a P2P game. You could have a perfectly great connection and still see lag if someone else is the host of the activity you're in (and that goes for every activity in the game, not just PvP).

I live in The Netherlands, where we have always had a much better internet then the most country's. In 2005 i've had a fiber optics internet and i played CoD 4 and Halo's 24/7. (by figure of speech). In CoD 4 i was always the host and everybody wanted to play in my party. We were owning big time. In Destiny i was always punished for playing wired on my 150/ 30 Mbit/s internet. I die like i'm playing CoD Hardcore (really) and my bullets don't do much damage. So this connection is PERFECT for my enemies! Maybe 1 in 7 matches i may play normally and i do normal damage and see the enemies appear on my screen on time. So on my good wired connection my data is being sent perfectly, but i get broken data back and much too late. Maybe i will be able to "profit" (normal gameplay for 2017) in Destiny 2, if we'll get dedicated servers. So try playing wireless AND wired and see what's better for you. And in Destiny 2 check again.

          • a direct cable isn't worth it when your top speed is at 15mb-ish.. my router is in the same room as my ps4.. i have a 100mb feed.. i don't notice a difference in cable to wireless.. i think ps4 has it's limits (i guess around 40mb) maybe because that's more than enough to play online games.. if your access is limited try to set a bandwith management on your router.. this should guarantee your ps4 the bandwith it needs.. only the other devices in your network will notice the lack of speed..

I would do the following: 1. Run a speed test connected to wifi. Reboot your system. 2. Run another speed test connected to your router with a cable. 3. If you see an improvement, next weekend, you can run the cable downstairs. 4. If no improvement take the weekend off. You deserve it!!

              • It depends. If you are not the host of the match, then you will probably be fine - i.e., you won't lag, and no one else will see you teleporting all over the map. HOWEVER, if you are host, it may cause an issue as every other person is the match is jumping through your router to get to your console. Then other players may see issues like you (host) taking a shit-ton of bullets without dying, or teleporting like a madman, etc etc. And all the while you will be playing the best game of your life LMAO. If someone else is hard wired into your router, and depending on the router design, they may take a massive portion of your bandwidth. People jumping on wirelessly can do that too. If you have someone streaming youtube vids or Netflix while you are playing, it will slow you down. Hell, years ago when I had DSL, my wife using Facebook would kill my connection with Halo 4 - seriously, just kill it. This is why Bungie needs to convince Mama Activision to give them a dedicated server setup. It is not like Activision is on the brink of bankruptcy here...just tell that CEO he has to wait a few months before buying that second private island to store his other 17 yachts for chrissake...

                  • i play on wifi too, my router is a floor above. i never lag, never get hatemail for being laggy, and occasionally i'll ask a friend to play a private match with me to tell me if i'm lagging or not. just further evidence that your personal connection has little effect on how laggy you are in game.

                  • I wondered this same thing. I have an advertised 100mb down internet speed. When I run wireless I get around 15mb down at the ps4. When I ran hard wired I get mid 40s. A pretty big jump, but upon entering crucible I noticed all of the lag and internet connection related issues still remained. Navigating the ps4 menu and game menus seemed smoother and quicker, but gameplay still felt like the same ole destiny. Needless to say I dont clog up the halls of my house with my Ethernet cord for the same results. Hope this helps.

                  • Wired is always better then wireless for gaming, if you have the option to go hardwired then do it Just because it says it's 100% at time of test don't mean it is 2 seconds later

                  • Move up 1 more floor and add your phone to the wifi and stream a vid or two while playing. This should drastically improve your game.

                          • Your download speed is slow compared to what a lot of users have now. If you cannot afford a higher speed, that's understandable. However, is there a chance you can run a cable from the router to your console?
