The helium filaments on the moon and the mining operation? Based off of the prospect of mining helium-3 from the moon's surface too. Lots of detail behind what they've done on each location which is great.

Those are Helium-3 collectors. The idea behind Helium-3 mining is that the sun emits a ton of it and the Moon, with no magnetic field to reflect solar radiation, gets bombarded by the stuff. We think that the ground must have absorbed a lot of it so we can mine it out. The Helium-3 collectors however are different in that they simply try to absorb the Helium-3 coming from the Sun themselves so it doesn't have to be mind. Imagine it like leaving a bucket in the rain.

That'd be great, as apparently the moon's surface has a finite amount.

So thats why we find them in piles on the ground? Some golden age space 49er left them there to collect the helium-3 and come back after they're full.
