There is, for sure, life in the universe besides on Earth.

There is almost certainly life elsewhere than Earth. I'd say a 99.999999% chance. In fact, it may be within our own solar system. Jupiter's moon Europa has warm, liquid water beneath its outer ice layer. Besides, there could be life that has evolved to non-Earth-like conditions. That is 2 places in our own solar system that could have Earth-like life. Scientists have discovered over 500 solar systems in our own Milky Way Galaxy with more being discovered all the time. Hubble has discovered over 100 billion galaxies, and that is only what we can see so far. We are not alone, we are not special. That is all. Edit: Saying we are alone because we haven't discovered life yet is as egotistical as saying Earth is the center of the universe.

  • I get what your saying and don't disagree. But I just love how they throw out numbers like 100 billion as if they sat there and counted them all. Cool side note. My Uncle had a hand in the development and planning of the Hubble.

    • We don't know how life started, therefore will never know if life can exist elsewhere, unless we find someone from elsewhere and learn how it began

      • I hope we discover other life soon. Then we can have proof of all religions being false and accept science as the major belief system. We can finally progress forward as a species instead of be held back.

          • The conditions required for carbon based life forms to exist are very small, too many variables. The probability of it existing elsewhere in the universe, (taking into consideration how much matter there will ever be in the universe) is nexto 0. But there is hope! Life doesnt always need Earthly like conditions to survive AND the fact it ever happend on Earth goes against all probability.

              • 99.999999 % isn't "sure" I never speak in certainty because I always think about if I'm wrong. I use "probably" and "maybe" a lot.

Isn't the question about sentient life forms, and not just life itself? Hey, we could be all there is, who's to know. As for animal/plant life, that's most likely a certainty.

                • The universe is infinitely expanding. New planets, solar systems, stars, and entire galaxies are made every second. Time is infinite. There is infinite time for new planets to take the place of the old ones. Somewhere, sometime, life will have to exist beyond earth.

                  • I don't get how people can think there isn't other life in the universe. With quadrillions of stars in the galaxy, billions of galaxies in the universe, it's practically impossible for there to not be life somewhere. It's just a matter of how far is the closest one to us, and how long have they been there?

It's an interesting subject for sure. Fermi's paradox does a good job of using math to argue that the universe should be teeming with life. According to the numbers, we should see signs of life practically everywhere. But we don't. Hence the paradox. Personally I think it's just as likely that no other life exists, as it is that other life does exist (mathematically everywhere) and we somehow can't find it. There's just no way to know. One of those things that will remain a complete mystery until the day it isn't any more.

                        • The human body is largely composed of some of the most plentiful elements in the universe. You'd have to be fairly pretentious and egotistical to believe we're all that there is to offer.

Even if it does exist, we're likely so spread out most species would evolve and die out long before contact was established. We're constantly looking for planets that could support life. It's safe to assume they'd be doing the same. If life out there is similar to life down here, Earth would be REALLY appealing. If we haven't been found yet, we're probably not going to be found soon. Heck, we're probably more likely to find them at this point and, if we did, they're likely not "intelligent life". Also, as far as we know, life only occurred here once. Maybe it's begun and failed many times, maybe it hasn't, we don't know. The point is, we have absolutely no clue how likely or unlikely life is to occur. It's like reaching into a box of indeterminate size full of marbles and pulling out a red one. All you know is "there was a red marble" there's no guessing what the odds if pulling another is. Maybe they're all red. Maybe half of them are. Maybe that was the only one. Maybe there are no two of the same color. Who knows? To be honest, debating alien life at this point is pretty similar to debating god. Does it exist? Maybe yes, maybe no, but as of now we can't do anything more than search and speculate. It can be a fun debate (extra emphasis on "can", not "is" or "will be") but the actual truth is irrelevant; only your perception of it has any bearing on your life.
