Being able to carry over equipment would be a GOOD thing, AND it would be entirely possible

Why it is possible Items in this game are stored in a massive database. This database stores everything about that item, its stats, its icon, its model, what ornaments it works with, etc. To add an item to this database, you simply create a new record in it, and then you enter in the values for each field, such as mag size, stability, range, the file name of its model, etc. People say "but they CAN'T because new system, blah blah!", but that's bullcrap. Say I wanted to import the Doctrine of Passing. I'd create a new entry in the weapons database, modify the values of the weapon to be as close as possible to the original(lowest impact, highest RoF, possible perks, etc.), add the same model and icon as the original, then save the file. The Doctrine of Passing would then be in Destiny 2, albeit non-obtainable at this point. This would then be repeated for each and every exotic, all faction items, all cosmetics, all event-exclusive items, and all weapons. The ones that rely on specific subclasses would probably have to be altered to work similarly with the new subclasses instead, but aside from that would be relatively unchanged. For each and every item that was originally from D1, a new field would be added to the database (the itemID of the original item from the D1 database). This would allow for Bungie to create a feature in D2 to check our accounts to see what stuff we had either on our guardians, in our vaults, and what we unlocked in the kiosks. It would enable an import feature. Granted, this would be a LOT of work on Bungie's part, but it would definitely be possible. Maybe the money they get through this "last event" could even help fund it? Why it would be a good thing We worked hard to earn those items, each one of them represents what we had to do to earn them. The items are our Destiny experience, and being able to keep them would make our time in Destiny feel like it actually meant something. The items could even be held behind a time gate of some kind. You know, give us the chance to try out the new stuff, give the new players a chance to catch up, and give Bungie the time they'd need to test the old weapons for balance issues...then say "you guys want a nostalgia booster? Well here's that weapon you spent weeks trying to get last year!" By giving us the chance to experience D2 for what it is, and then giving us access to our old gear, you'd be providing us with both a fresh start and giving us the greatest birthday gift of all time. Sort of like having your cake and eating it too. I loved Destiny, no matter how many times it hurt me, but ditching everything to continue is a huge decision, and it's a decision I feel many would refuse to make.
