Lets be real here. There is no intention to balance. Only to change a stale meta

We are living meta to meta. Something will always rise to the top. You push something down on one end only to have something else poke back up on another. Do you believe that bungie doesn't know this? They've actually said it themselves a few times that true balance is next to impossible. So, assuming they know this, why should they fight a battle they know they can't win? It is my belief that instead of making an attempt at achieving balance (which would get stale on it's own if achievable) they recognize that changing a meta to another is far easier and would pay off more in the long run. A meta becomes a cycle (or season if you prefer) that only serves to relieve the one that came before it. To freshen the experience rather than letting it rot. If there ever was a true consensus on what destiny would be as a pefectly balanced game, the end result would be the same. It would eventually get stale. A meta shift is nothing more than an attempt to keep things fresh and extend the longevity of the game and has nothing to do with "balance". The evidence of this is how sloppy weapon balance changes have been throughout the games lifespan. Im not going to make a list of changes I don't agree with but instead point you towards one I think stands out from this last patch (and believe me there is more than one). Sidearms have always had the intrinsic ability that allows you to respawn with ammo. Do you think they suddenly forgot about that when they made the special ammo changes that take away ammo upon death? They intentionally gave sidearms a huge push up by making it the only special weapon type that allows it and the upcoming patch won't change that very much. They intentionally made sidearms the new meta. This is not a true attempt at acheiving balance or else they would have wiped ammo for all special weapons (which would of been fair imho). Stop fooling yourselves into thinking it's about "balance". Its about using meta's to increase the longevity of a stale game.

  • They are trying to balance it...they just can't. Its virtually impossible with the amount of archetypes per weapon type, in edition to trying to keep exotics from vastly overpowering other things, this game can't really achieve balance. So yes, we will continue to live meta-to-meta, though I'd say there may be only one more change, if that, before D2. Hopefully, they'll learn their lesson and be able to give us a more balanced PvE product.

    • The only problem i have with the way they do this is each meta is weaker than the last. Every meta shift is brought on with nerfs and no buff on the other side of the scale to keep the same level, it just slowly spirals down as the meta spins around the wheel.

        I believe bungie has stated that they want every gun type to have its day. It's sidearm day. This will change. And you are correct, it's nothing about balance.

        • They think they are balancing everything out but going by a spreedsheet does not help. Part of the problem is everyone wants to use the easiest fastest killing gun cause of the my kd is better then yours argument. Then the few people who play for fun and dont take the game seriously kind of get a bad deal. Once one sheep falls off the cliff everybody follows. Also there is a counter to everything (exept lag,ddos,chronusmax etc.) but people dont want to adapt which is a issue. To many different playing styles to cater to so there will be no good or perfect balance. If there was there will be people who will complain about something. Now bungie also needs to play their dam game to so they can see whats going on. Watching the stream was making me cringe at parts.

        • the people who are truly fooling themselves are the ones that think this game can be balanced. there are simply too may combinations of weapons/perks to balance. the only way it to completely revamp every weapon and perk. and for a game that is 2.5 years old, never going to happen.

          • Yea thats what ive been saying, like primaries have gotten better and balanced but this whole sidearm bs is stupid anybody would have been able to see that something that spawns with special and KEEPS it would reign especially that range.

          • That became evident with the first nerf. It's simple shuffling. There has never been any balancing. The winners become the losers then, eventually, the winners again. It's recycling, better done than Advanced Disposal Inc... They call it 'meta'. I call it BS (Bungie Style)!

          • With how many perks and archetypes there are for different weapons, its impossible to balance pvp. Idk what their goal is, but every weapons balance makes my weapons feel weaker and weaker. Idk how they can fix this, but hopefuly something changes for D2

            You can't achieve true balance, but you can achieve a fun meta. Having numerous subclasses and exotics get unfairly nerfed while watching everyone play passively and peck at each other with sidearms since all other specials automatically lose all ammo on death is not fun.

            • This is why my buddies don't play anymore...these balance/nerf/buff patches are just weapon meta changes...one patch results in high impact/low rate of fire pulse meta (hopscotch/messenger)...next patch results in low impact/high rate of fire pulse impact (grasp/hawksaw)....next patch results in a side arm meta...then there was the thorn/hawk moon meta etc etc...these aren't balance patches if they were ALL weapons would be viable by now...I feel this is just bungie trolling us...it's amazing how "tier 1/prestigious" game developing company can't get their shit together after 3 years...

              What kind of "balance" are you looking for? That's the most over used term around here. How exactly do you balance a loot based shooter?

              • It's not "stale" for some.....and that could be said regardless of any "meta" at any point in time, or whether different ones would have ever existed. For some, it's like playing anything else (e.g. Chess, Backgammon, etc). The difference is this game caters to the vocal, fickle masses because that's the nature of it's average consumer. This should be obvious.

                • I'm amazed some people have only figured this out now lol It's been the case since half way through year 1. Somewhere on the internet is a quote from bungie saying they wanted to people to "remember the suros era and remember the thorn era"

                  League of legends (probably dota as well) change the meta all the time. They buff and nerf champions on a regular basis making sure to keep a "one map" game fresh at all times. The same is also true for MMORPG`s. I heard its time for my monk to get back into WoW PvE right now, he was only used for PvP when i played last. Destiny is no different with a lot of subclasses, weapons and archetypes.
