What are your favorite rpgs?

what are the best or at least your favorite rpgs? it's a open ended question any type of any series or single game whether isometric, turn based, first person, sci-fi, fantasy, western, jrpg or whatever.
in no particular order here are a few of my favorites. 1) Star ocean 2 (star ocean series) Coming to the states in the 90s a sequel to a game that wasn't even released here this game was my gateway to videogames, jrpgs and reading. it was a fairly typical jrpg hero's journey but with a sci-fi twist with one of the main pov characters basically being from Starfleet stranded on a fantasy world beyond that it had fun realtime combat that difeniated it from the more well known turn based format popularized by final fantasy that dominated at the time and it offered some good replayablity by playing from one of two main characters youd recruit entirely different party members in one playthrough than another. 2) Tactics ogre let us cling together (tactics ogre series) A criminally underrated game of a criminally underrated series far ahead of its time that was unfortunately overshadowed by similar but lessor titles like fire emblem and final fantasy tactics the latter of the two ironic because it was inspired by tactics ogre itself and some of the same devs even worked on them. This game had it all, deep methodical small unit turn based tactics over a tile by tile isometric area with an emphasis on positioning and planing with a dynamic story of multiple choices leading to different levels, recruitable characters and endings. In comparison to final fantasy tactics it had more classes and units on the field at once and most importantly it's story had choice and was grounded. it wasn't some cliche about a epic quest to gather crystals but a much more subdued gritty tale of thematic struggles of class, revolution and politics complete with sympathetic villains and questionable heros. it never officially got localised until a cleaned up port to psp in 2010 that I highly recommend but it was still a very popular bootleg translation in the 90s. Knights of the old republic aka Kotor (star wars knights of the old republic series) Often and rightly hailed as the best star wars game but also a great game in it's own right Kotor let players be a Jedi and save the galaxy or a sith conquering it or something in between. it is yet another game with dynamic story and branching outcomes offering plenty of replayablity but it also provided the template for biowares own great original hits like Dragon age and Mass effect. Fallout New Vegas (fallout series) The original fallouts were great and Bethesdas iterations are great too but to me new vegas is the best in the series. Using fallout 3s engine piggybacking on Bethesdas legwork arkane including some of the black isle devs of the original series new vegas incorporated a lot of a different and canceled fallout 3 thats narrative was planed and refined for about 2 decades before it was pulled for the game and it shows in it's richly detailed world. But these games are known for the freedom they allow players and this one has alot hell iv got a whole playthrough were I guned down everyone, all of nevada is just a ghost town full of corpses and devoid of life, faction wars and fetch quests just silence... and Frank sintra songs. Elder scrolls Oblivion (Elder scrolls series) Another great series under Bethesdas belt. Marrowind is probably more iconic and skyrim more advanced but oblivion is my favorite simply for it's setting, I hate snow and I'm not a fan of ash but the grassy knolls, hills, swamps and mountains of cryodill made oblivion the most diverse landscape in the series. Needless to say this game is good. Kingdoms of amalur Another criminally underrated title that sadly killed the studio that made it because it floped so hard. This game by all accounts should have been a hit as it had a interesting dynamic story, fun challenging gameplay, a huge budget and plenty of good talent working on it including the original creator of spawn but despite this and releasing to rave reviews it just didn't sell enough to break even, some believe it was becuse it realeased during a crowded and competive time along more established titles like skyrim and the studio went under directly as a result though the ip did get scooped up by somebody so maybe theres faint hope for a sequel but who knows. Either way if you got a xbox360 or a ps3 or 4 I recommend picking up this steal of a game because last I saw it was going for just 2$. Alpha protocal This game is also criminally underrated and will almost assuredly not see a sequel which is a shame because this game had so much promise as a series. It was basically mass effect but in the real world and instead of being commander shaperd you were James bond, or Jason Bourne or Jack bower a secret agent who was by the book or flew flagrantly in its face, a calm consummate professional or a improvisational rogue or something in between. Having a gunfight in a Russian club to 1980s music like turn up the radio made for fun unique set pieces but this game really shined with the way it handled choice. Yes many games have choice but sometimes it's not really choice but the illusion of choice making only for slight differences to a predetermined end with a few differences but alpha protocol was completely different depending not just on your narrative choices but even how you played the game itself like whether you were silent, loud, lethal or mercifully, you can go the whole game without firing a shot or killing a single individual and the game and it's world know and react to it. The bannersaga (bannersaga series) A tactical turn based strategy from two prominent ex bioware devs that left when they didn't like the direction the company was going in. The banner saga is a passion project that mixes unforgiving turn based combat with unforgiving choices and resource management that will have you agonizing over every seemingly trival matter that almost always has far reaching consequences as you lead a caravan of survivors through a Vikingesk world that is literally falling apart.
